I have in the past turned a movie off, and resumed it later.

Hoping for this feature in the future....Resident Evil: Ext has the bookmark ability. Every movie should have that option or be built into the player(i use ps3).

I have a question regarding the bookmark feature. I've been playing with it on a few Fox titles, it bookmarks and saves the spot.

But once I exit the movie to the main PS3 screen...and go back into the film later...my saved bookmarks aren't there. Why doesn't this work? What am I missing?

But I tried the bookmark feature on Close Encounter of the 3rd Kind (30th Anniversary), even I pull out the disc, and turn off PS3 power, reinsert the disc, the bookmark still there.

The latest firmware update (2.2) due out later this month for PS3 will allow "Resume Play" function. Many people were requesting this feature for some time.

https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1132

"Resume play" will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. (*1)
*1 BD-J format disc is not supported

Has anyone checked the “resume function” of the latest upgrade. I have seen comments that this has not worked at least for some cases. This could be due to BD-J incompatibility. Any comments? (I haven’t checked this myself as I have not updated yet.)

Thanks. Is this information available somewhere in the web or this need to be tested by individuals.

So far for me, BD Resume play on Stealth works, Resident Evil doesn't.

Angry waiting for the update. no reason to see if some trick works or not.

yeah ps3 needs to come out with an update for this resume disc problem. if the technology can go as advanced as having a blu ray hi def movie, they can easily invest some of the time and money to make the "resume" feature work properly.

if i hit stop while i am watching a movie. and i want to resume it back, I CANNOT DO IT.. it starts over. so there is no point of turning off ps3 to see if this "trick" works.

but the point it. if you are paying $500 for a gaming console/blu ray player, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO TRY A TRICK TO SEE IF IT WORK FOR ALL OF US OR NOT.

excuse my language. but YES i am yelling!!!!!!!

we want an update
we want an update

can we go on like a strike or something guys??????

My hypothesis on why there is no automatic resume play is that what we know as resume play on DVD is simply bookmarking. On DVD, no application is running while you're watching the movie; the DVD menu button will call up the menu screens and the subtitles/audio buttons are player dependent.

With BDs, pop-up menus are part of a simple application that runs concurrent with the movie; that's not including actual BD-J apps. To resume play, you have to capture the state of the player when you pressed stop, something like suspending a laptop into hibernation. This may require more persistent memory more than the first/second gen BD players allow (PS3 is a league on its own). Bookmarking with BD-J is easy to implement (it doesn't have to capture the player's state) but was just not implemented on the authoring side
This is mostly correct. To do a "save state" requires a ludicrous amount of storage space and effort.

Bookmarking is actually a cheat and a workaround

Great BDJ programmers are working on ways to implement auto-resume, I'm sure they'll come up with a similar cheat in due time like the one that enabled bookmarking

I don't have the technical explanation, but I know some movies do pick up where they were left off. Any time I put in Hellboy, it goes straight to the end credits somewhere. Just wherever I happened to have stopped it the last time I stopped the movie when I was done watching it. The rest of my movies have to reload though, and pick up from the beginning or menu. And my player is a PS3.

First of all, relax. There isn't a Playstation coming to kill you while you sleep.

Not all Blu-ray discs allow the 'Resume Play' function to work with the Playstation 3 due to such things as having to 'load' first which throws off the function. On the other hand, there are a lot of Blu-ray discs that are compatible.

I personally have found most of my movies resume.

I went to put in Shawshank redemption and the last time I watched it was about 3 months ago... anyways it started at the credits where i last watched it.

I have seen this on a few other movies too.

Not sure why it happens and sometimes it doesn't.

Personally I HATE THAT... I always finish my movies when I put it in. I never watch a bit and come back... so I ALWAYS want it to start at the beginning.

I'm wondering if it has the capability to allow me to watch part of a BR, stop it, power down the machine, then come back later, power it up and start playing where I left off. Is this something the player controls? Is this a disc encoding choice?
Does anyone know if the Pioneer BDP-51FD will do the above ?

Thanks !
