This is with Warner Bros. in the US and I'd be fairly surprised if they release it on 4K disc here. Still, guess we can import if they don't.

Great! Now I can traumatize my son with the drowning in the fountain scene just like I was as a lad. Maybe it will become a family tradition.

I honestly hope for a compromise, a new version with all the footage of the director's cut and most of the theatrical version's music. That would be the best version right there. Because, ignoring the music, the director's cut is the vastly superior version in terms of storytelling and character development. The theatrical version is rushed, underdeveloped, and poorly paced on its own. And that's before getting into how subpar the theatrical version is as an adaptation.

StudioCanal owns international rights through French co-producer & distributor AMLF and that of UK distributor EMI. I imagine Warner and Coppola have just finished the 4k resto of the Directors Cut version (approved by Coppola himself), being StudioCanal used Warners masters for their Blus and are probably using what's given to them.

It could just be that I read the book and saw the Complete Novel edition first, but when I watched the theatrical cut shortly after, it was a little jarring to me and felt incomplete. The only negative I had with the Complete Novel edition was the music.

I recently purchased the Amazon stream for the theatrical cut and kind of wish I had just rented it instead. I hadn't seen the theatrical cut in atleast 17 years (and was the version I grew up with like many others) and I really missed the new footage on this viewing. I had always thought the original score was better than the music changes to the Complete Novel cut but now I prefer the Complete Novel music over the original score for the most part (which is still a very good score). I also love the color timing so much better on the Complete Novel cut. It gives the film a real classic, golden age look and feel.

If you were a fan of the book before you saw the movie, and/or you have lived in Tulsa and want to see more of the city (Circle Cinema, for example), The Complete Novel is the better of the two versions. Both versions should be available on Blu-ray and the upcoming 4K, though. Just like every movie with more than one official version.

I'd be happy with a release that includes both cuts. I don't like the practice of studios making original theatrical cuts disappear or difficult to find for long periods of time (see: The Warriors, Star Wars, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly).

I agree. Has to be BOTH cuts for me (I like both as they individually have their own distinct merits to me).

HOLY SHIITAKE!!!!

This day will actually come?!

Coppola surely has let enough time pass to understand the need for both cuts. Maybe we'll get even more deleted footage, or that ludicrous soccer match home video from the making of the film only released for the French Blu-ray.

....damn, now I really gotta step my 4K game up. This is one of my all-time favorites finally coming.

Man I was just thinking the other day how great of a candidate this’d be for a 4K upgrade. This is very high on my most wanted list, so I’m excited.

Uh no. They need to stop with the tinkering. Just like with Apocalypse Now they need theatrical preserved. That was the hit and that is what the public saw for most of the time.

Include the "full novel" as an extra and one can make whatever cut one likes with software tools.

I just hope theatrical doesn't have a cut in quality like Apocalypse Now where theatrical has an inferior bit rate.
