It gets better with multiple watchings. Yes, it's silly and unbelievable, but that doesn't stop it from being great. That's the fact, Jack!

I'm in that same boat of only being interested in 3 of the 6 films getting released in this set. I skipped out on Vol. 1 for that purpose of only wanting Lawrence of Arabia and Jerry Maguire. However it seems those should be coming individually soon, but I've gotta have Stripes day 1, so I'll grab this set for that one, Taxi Driver and The Social Network and sell off the other three titles.....

I remember sneaking into the Drive-in...with my 10 speed...to watch this movie MULTIPLE times (I was 14)! I've probably watched it a dozen times. I am SUPER excited to see this in 4K and the theatrical version to boot.

Extended is absolutely awful!

But that said, it'll be good to have both cuts in 4k. Love this movie. Interestingly, the special edition DVD from back in the day included both cuts on the same disc. I'm not sure why they couldn't do the same for blu-ray. Oh, well. Doesn't matter now.

I had that DVD, and the theatrical cut was unwatchable. They didn't use seamless branching, the disc would actually auto-skip chapters that were part of the extended cut like you were pushing the chapter-skip on your remote, but it would start a couple of seconds before the scene was actually over and trip over dialog. l don't know why they made the disc like that, but ah well. It's nice they're finally doing the release right for once.

I went to the Fathom Events screening tonight and, as expected, it was not a DCP. The featurette before the movie with Bill Murray and Ivan Reitman ran around 7 1/2 minutes and was entitled "40 Years Of Stripes With Bill And Ivan". This is most likely an edited version of the featurette of the same name that will be on the upcoming 4K UHD. I say edited because the press release for the 4K UHD says cinematographer Bill Butler makes an appearance and he didn't make an appearance on the Fathom Events featurette.

4K UHD press release:
Quote:
NEW: 40 Years of Stripes With Bill & Ivan – a two-part on-camera reunion between star Bill Murray and director Ivan Reitman, discussing their careers, memories from set, a tribute to the cast, as well as a special guest appearance from cinematographer Bill Butler

40 years ago, 'Stripes' starring Bill Murray was filmed in Kentucky. Look back at the movie

If you lived in the Louisville area in 1980, you may remember those six weeks when Hollywood came to town. The cast and crew filmed the basic training scenes at Fort Knox. The Czechoslovakia scenes were filmed at the Jim Beam-owned Chapeze Distillery in Clermont.

The film crew and actors also spent several days shooting scenes around Louisville on Washington Street and W. Main Street, a barbershop on W. Market Street, and perhaps most recognizably, the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, known locally as the Second Street Bridge.

Massive upgrade.

Look at this scene. So much clipped/blown out on the BD.

Looks really nice based on those screencaps. Still haven't watched the theatrical cut I got on Vudu, but I'd imagine this is a decent step up from that.

Why is the theatrical cut preferred over the extended?

Far better pacing/editing.

What are the chances of a standalone 4k release? Really don't want to have to buy this whole set just for Stripes...

To release it as part of a large set on the same year the movie turns 40 must be one of the worst decisions ever. Surely its spot on the Columbia Classics could have been given to another movie that won't sell that much separately.

I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be the reason most people buy the set. It's a new master of both cuts on both UHD and BD and it even includes the TV cut. Unless Sony are beyond stupid, they'll release separately at some point.

Sony are good at being thick at times, but here's hoping.

I have fond memories of "Stripes" because it seemed like the one SNL/SCTV comedy that didn't disappoint me. I thought that this comedy is going to be great and it was.

Just buy the set and sell off the digital copies and other movies. You can get it for about $85 at Deep Discount right now with their 15% code.
