I think I did think about it once. I don't know. All these actors are way older than me, so I didn't put too much thought into it. But yeah, this is one of the reasons why I don't watch teen comedies. I think Hollywood slowed down the teen genre anyway. Which makes sense because it would be creepy getting someone at that actual age range and who the hell are you fooling casting a 20 or 30-something years old as a teen.

Every time I watch Insidious it really unsettles me. The use of music and sound in that film really contributes to an extremely unnerving atmosphere.

Hereditary is another one. I only rewatched it once but I remember being equally scared as when I saw it in theaters.

I don’t know that I’d call Lars von Trier’s Antichrist scary, but it was certainly a gut punch. I watched both Salo and A Serbian Film and was unaffected by both, but Antichrist really got under my skin.

When I was a kid, the “Safe Haven” section from V/H/S/2 terrified me. I remember having the most difficult time sleeping that night.

The last film that really scared me was No Country for Old Men. Not sure why but the level of dread, the inevitability of violence and the nihilistic theme, plus the relentless of Chigur (which seem to be the depiction of evil) got me fearful throughout the film and anxious after I left the theater.

THE EXORCIST is #1 for me as well--- I have an uneasy feeling everytime I watch it--- there are scenes that I've seen numerous times but they upset me/creep me out every single time---
nothing else comes close---

Other films that I think are genuinely scary---

HEREDITARY
INSIDIOUS
LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (and quite a few other early 70's horror flicks-- they have a unique mood and sense of dread)
THE GRUDGE
THE GUARDIAN
THE SENTINEL

I just recently saw probably the only movie that has actually scared me as an adult:

The Exorcist for me as well. I'm not much of a scary movie person guy, but do see them occasionally. I remember seeing the 20th Anniversary or whatever it was re-release in the theater when I was in college (actually down in South FL doing an internship) and being terrified in the theater. I had zero expectations going in and that freaked me out. I was still freaked out a few hours later that night haha. Haven't re-watched it since.

It doesn't freak me out, but I will admit the way it was mixed in theaters, when the phone rings while Karras is listening to the tapes of Regan's voice, it came from directly behind my head and surprised me more effectively than any typical "jump scare".

The Blair Witch Project's ending scares me no matter how many times I watch it. The look of the house, the sort of disorienting cutting between the two cameras as the characters navigate the house, and finally Heather Donahue's genuinely terrified whimpering and screaming as she finds Mike facing the wall. Literally hair-raising and disquieting in a way that lingers with me for a while after the movie's finished.

The Exorcist, still, to this day, creeps me out, even though I've seen it, easily, over 30 times. Something about it just gets creepier over the years. I haven't seen it recently, and next time I do, certainly not at night alone.

Another is the full two-night version of Hooper's Salem's Lot. I first saw it on a black and white transistor TV in my bedroom when I was eight years old and quickly found my new nightmare fuel. I have vampire-phobia to this day, even though I haven't seen a truly scary vampire film in a long, long time...Fright Night in the 80's was the last time a vampire movie scared me.

EDIT

Whoops, forgot one...caught the last 30 minutes of Count Yorba at 4:00 in the morning about 12 years ago, and caught a bad case of goosebumps. Wrong movie to watch after just waking up in the still dark of night.

I truly wish The Exorcist had an effect on me like it has on so many other people. I've watched it during many stages of my life (first time I was a teenager; most recent time I was in my mid-40s) and no part of it has ever bothered me in the least. Oh well.

CUJO is another one that works so well because of its performances (dog included). What's more terrifying than a rabid dog is realizing, as a child, that your protector is as scared as you are. A part of me believes that the kid is so convincingly frightened because he actually thought he was in danger.

Agreed. The teaser trailer is better.

Halloween, I can't keep my eyes open in some key moments in it which is saying something given my usual iron clad stomach.

The scariest movie for me.

Hostel would be the second scariest.

Too bad part 3 ruins the creepy illusion by making Blair Witch an alien.

There are moments in this miniseries (sorry, I cheated) I know I will never be able to shake.

Anyone checking my collection will see what a huge role horror plays in it, but I can't say I've found any particularly frightening outside of certain "in the moment" scenarios or circumstances.

Chernobyl absolutely terrified me.

Honorable mention?

And those who've seen it know why.
