Hopefully "Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross", "Do You Remember Love", and "Macross Plus" are not far from this release. That was something I was most excited for when the Big West/Harmony Gold union was announced.

Do You Remember Love probably has legal issues that need to be worked out, since it wasn't made part of the Robotech package/cannon and never had a proper release in the US. There was an English dub made for it, but it was produced by the infamous Hong Kong outfit Omni Productions ("well known" for their Takara/Toei Transformers series dubs as well as the Godzilla 1984 and Heisi Era dubs).

If I had to guess, it's probably because Tatsunoko were unable to locate the 16mm OCNs or perhaps they accidentally shipped them to Harmony Gold not knowing their value at the time.
Perhaps they created a new blowup IP from the 16mm OCN. Bandai had a strange tendency to print new IPs from OCN.

I don't believe it was created by Omni Productions or Axis International like some people think. Matthew Oram and Barry Haigh, who both are in the dub, had a dubbing company around that time (name currently unknown). Rik Thomas (Omni founder) and Ted Thomas (Axis founder, no relation to Rik) are not in the dub.

I'm pretty sure I heard Rik Thomas's voice as one of the main Zentraedi leaders. Take a look at the Zentraedi introduction (which was in it's own language in the JP version) and you'll see what I mean.

If you're talking about Britai, think he's voiced by Matthew Oram.

I too prefer the image/color grading of the Funi BD's. The JP is tad dark and saturated to me - but both are a huge improvement over the DVD.

Looks like the CE is up on Funimation. $260 is way out of my price range. I will likely get the Macross saga though.

The individual Robotech BD sets would be around $53 each ($70 MSRP). That's basically a extra $100 for the Veritech figure ($55 retail), Roy Fokker figure ($13 retail), the patches and boxes ($32?).

I mean, you get your money's worth but you're not really getting a good deal either. And if you have no interest in the figures then you probably should pass. Unless you just really want the slip box, then you could sell off the other stuff.

Yeah, no interest in the extras, esp at that price point... just to be able to get all 3 stories at the same time.

If it seems this version will be an improvement over the A&E dvd set, I will go for the individual releases.

Yup, will definitely wait for cheaper standard editions with no figures, models, etc. For the record, I paid only $35 for Lionsgate's massive all-encompassing DVD boxset.

Times like this I wish studios released budget breakdowns for at least projects that are now historical like Robotech.

Given the cost of traditional animation (pencil sketches, animation cels, hand painted backgrounds etc) along with the soundtrack and voice recording, is shooting all that in 16mm vs 35mm really that much of a cost savings overall?

Thinking about it (in realtime while posting as I often do, lol ) I suppose they were just trying to lower costs where they could and given the fact that the show was going to be delivered on a videotape master (Beta SP most likely) for eventual OTA TV broadcast, there isn't much if any difference to the viewer between the two film gauges. If it were shown in the theaters sure, but not for TV.

It’s likely coming to the UK considering Zavvi accidentally leaked it back in April.

So can someone explain to me what the difference is between Robotech and Macross? Is what Funimation is releasing Macross but with the robotech name? From what I know is that robotech was a westernized version of macross. Is that still the case with this release?

As a newbie to this franchise I'm confused about these products they're releasing

Robotech is a pseudo-anime series based on Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. They took those Japanese television animation series and re-cut and English dubbed them into something else, which is what is known as Robotech.

Robotech is a cut up mish-mash of 3 different anime: SDF Macross, SDC Southern Cross, and GC Mospeada, each being presented as different 'seasons'. The 1st season, called the 'Macross Saga' of Robotech, is heavily edited and has its plot altered significantly from the original Macross. This was done in order to tie it in with the other anime (SDC Southern Cross becomes the 2nd season, 'The Masters Saga'. GC Mospeada becomes the 3rd season 'The New Generation') and make them take place after the Macross Saga.

FUNimation will have to release Macross as a seperate product, which they likely will after this release. If you're JUST looking to get into the Macross series, don't bother with Robotech. That being said, I still find Robotech to be entertaining for its own reasons, though for me it's mostly for historical value

Really looks like the new dub only Initially I thought it did where it listed english 2.0 but that's for special features

The whole point of anyone buying such an iconic retro series on bluray is for people who grew up on that same dub - perfectly fine with it having the new dub but only in combination with the old one too, its a slap in the face imo & all the new sound effects are weird

That screenshot comparison seems quite shocking too, far too bright leading to loss of detail - you can tell in the shades of colour from the original HD cap

It’s the exact same dub that aired in the 80s, but with less censorship and some changes to the sound mix. Having the original mix on the disc would be impossible since the timing would never match.
