No shipment yet for me. Another last minute Best Buy shipment once again. I miss getting steelbooks as early as Fridays and sometimes Saturdays. Those days have been over for me especially this year.

My local Best Buy didn't have this one in stores. I had to do an online order.
Chatting with Best Buy's online customer support sucks

I did manage to get the steelbook, enjoyed the movie and ready for the third movie

Will there even be a 3rd movie?

[Show spoiler]For the most part this movie revolves around the plot of MKII, with what at first seems to be (and still could be) a set up for a movie based on MK3 since they bring in several characters from it.

But the plot with Shinnok, and especially everything that happens after Liu Kang defeats Shao Kahn seems to VERY loosely adapt some concepts and plot points from the later games.

In the games, the concept of The One Being was first brought up in MK Deception. But he is mostly only mentioned in the games that have come out since. He has never been a playable character or a boss. His only on-screen appearance is in Shinnok's ending to MKX where he is shown as a blue face in the sky eating the Elder gods as seen in the video linked below.

And Liu Kang becoming a god was from some dlc in MK11, but that was the result of him merging with Raiden for a time (and remaining a god after, with Raiden becoming Mortal). He does not receive these powers from the Elder gods.

But this movie seems to very loosely adapt these concepts. Shinnok gets the komidogu to release The One Being, which he succeeds at doing at the end of the movie. The Elder gods reward Liu Kang with their powers after defeating Shao Kahn so he can battle The One Being.

Of note is that The One Being's appearance in this seems to resemble the Corrupted form of Shinnok from MKX (who was the final boss of the game), but in neither the games nor this movie (as far as I can tell), Shinnok and The One Being are not the same character, nor do they merge.

So all kinds of liberties are taken here. Which I get that these movies aren't going to be 100% perfect literal adaptations of the games. But beyond the level of liberties taken, plot-wise this just feels like hey jumped into some kind of end all/be all finale. The One Being was merging ALL of the realms until Liu Kang stops him. Also, while I know Liu Kang has a finishing move in the games where he turns into a dragon, having him turn into one for most of this end battle is a little too reminiscent of MK Annihilation... but I digress on that point.

If this is not the last movie, where does this go from here? The plot of MK3 with Shao Kahn trying to forcefully merge Earthrealm with Outworld? Seems kind of redundant and anti-climactic after this ending with The One Being merging ALL of the realms.

And Liu Kang is a god now, so would he continue to be in following movies that might be based on plotlines from other games (MK3 or otherwise) in which he did not have these abilities?

I can't help but wonder if they had plans for more movies (with something like this being an eventual finale they were considering) that maybe got cut short during production, being decided that this will be the last one, so they just tied it all up with this... a climactic battle that we have not yet even seen in the games (but it seems they might be building to something akin to it eventually).

I'm not saying that the movie was terrible. I enjoyed many aspects of it. I think they crammed WAY too much into it, especially compared to the last one.

What I liked about it was seeing a story mainly adapted from MKII. We often see that blurred over (it was skipped entirely in the 90s live action movies) and go right into plotlines beyond it in many adaptations.

It just stinks that this might be where this ends. It would have been nice to see the original trilogy of games made into a trilogy of movies... with any further films being "gravy." But we might not get that. And even if we do, major liberties will have to be taken given how this ended.

Yeah, I agree. I really enjoyed the movie but felt like there's nowhere for them to go from here. Kotal Kahn was never introduced, so they could go that route as far as another movie plot, but many of the characters are no longer alive (not that that really matters haha). At this point, if anyone were to be a threat, why wouldn't God Liu Kang just take care of them? Maybe Liu Kang's abilities are only temporary and he goes back to normal? Or sacrafices the power to restore everyone who died?

I also would like to see a DC crossover movie (like the game), so maybe that is a direction they can go? Maybe the events of that movie can reset the MK timeline?

Really liked Scorpions Revenge. I thought this was a huge step down. Way too much going on and could have been two movies worth of material. Even the fights were meh. Felt like just a montage if anything. I don't see where a sequel could go and honestly won't be disappointed if this is all we get.

If they had left certain cliffhanger elements out of the ending, I would have said no. But we live in the age of infinite sequels, so nothing ever truly ends. They could have wrapped up everything nicely and ended on a high note, while everyone thought it was still a great take on the franchise, but I suspect before long someone will try a third and less well done act.

Good looking out, just got almost $9 back. Damn, that was a pricey steelbook. Now to put that towards the Unbreakable steelbook.

Is there a trick to getting the site to recognize a price match link? I’ve had it work like once, every other time it’s unable to verify and I need to chat with an agent.

No, that's how it always is for me too. Like you said I think it worked once when it was first implemented
