I never thought DVD was a huge improvement on VHS for the picture quality, only it was ageing better and easier to stack. Even if 10% of those were blind buys (whom I got rid of for a few Euros) a big number won't be on Blu-ray soon if ever (some horror movies, Bollywood, Hong Kong).
In France, there's a "this must not be revealed" policy, retailers are good at disinformation to customers and I've never heard about HD format before buying the PS3.

Luckily I did, but it wasn't because of Hi-def discs on the horizon...for whatever reason I wasn't interested in a DVD collection. I love my BDs though so I'm very happy it worked out that way. I don't even own most of my favorite movies on DVD...mostly comedies that I would put in from time to time just to remember a line or something.

I bought my 1st dvd player the day of release. I own over 2000 movies, and i dont regret it. I stopped buying DVD's just before HD/BD came out, and switched over to those.

Like most, I will only double-dip on certain titles and will be content with most titles I own on DVD. I will admit that after watching content in HD, it's really hard to watch standard DVDs even upscaled. I'll pick up the Star Wars saga (again) and it will be a triple-dip for me (VHS, DVD and now Blu). I really don't consider this losing or wasting money. I've watched the movies enough to get my money's worth out of them. Besides, if we always wait around for the next big thing we may never enjoy what's available in the here and now. No one is promised tomorrow. No regrets.

my first DVD player was my PS2 back in 2000..Initially I didn't buy a lot of movies..a few years ago..I started buying a lot..and continued to do so until I got my launch PS3..I made a pledge to myslef that I would only buy on Blu if it was a special effects movie..but now every movie I want..I buy it on Blu if it's available.

So very true. The electronics world is a crazy place. Every week it seems something latest and greatest is coming out. You have to jump in eventually or you will never get to enjoy technology.

For me? Never got into DVD's, played a ton of video games. Now with blu I feel like I'm able to enjoy movies better. I didn't wait as so much never got into it.. and looking back I'm glad I didn't, would have regretted it buying blu's over again.

Technology is just that. Advancements from the present. And I know I live in the present. But some people think they can live in the future if they wait for it. Paradox isn't it?

For this reason alone, I pretty much waited out on DVDs. I would rent them but wouldn't buy too many because I knew that this superior format was coming out and I could experience quality that rivals (or is better) than most movie theaters.

Now that Blu-Ray provides essentially the pinnacle of quality suitable for home use, I have no reservations with buying movies now, so I've been buying them up like mad. I probably owned less than 20 DVDs and now I own more than twice that on Blu-Ray.
Careful not to do too much too fast. The transition from shadows puppets to Blu-ray is a shock to the system.

Nothing quite like the picture quality of a shadow puppet

I hadn't even heard of Blu-Ray or DUD until the end of 2005 or so. I unfortunately had nearly 1000 SD-DVD movies before I started selling them off and giving them to friends. I would say I am probably down to about 200 SD-DVD's now. But my blu collection has now reached nearly 200 titles. I still have my DUD collection, but more for historical value then to watch.

I didn't wait anything out, but I wasn't interested in movies during the VHS or DVD era. It was the 1080p thing that got me into movies.

I was an early adopter with DVD and it took me forever to replace my VHS collection. I currently have about 700+ titles and box sets and I am just getting started with Blu with close to 40 now. I am buying mainly new blu titles but I have replaced a few standards because I just had to (pirates). I see myself targeting just the major titles (Star Wars, LOTR and the sort) to be replaced first then slowly getting around to the other over time.

I should get a gig like Bill Hunt to get the freebies for review...that would definately help the wallet. Or maybe be a total shill like Harry Knowles and endorse anything they feed me...oh wait.

Yes, me too. I stopped buying DVD's in 2003 after i heard about the new blue-laser media. I've now nearly as many BD as DVD's.
