Disney could easily go the Constantin Film way.

Bringing out a blu-ray playable in 2D+3D like "Monster Hunter" & "Dragon Rider" for all these 3D movies.

So all customers would be happy.

But Disney is not interested. It`s a b**** move from them calling the Blu-ray+DVD+Art Cards boxing "DELUXE Edition" at the former price since SOUL.

Look at the preorder ranking for "Monster Hunter" on Amazon.de. The 2D+3D Steelbook is #1

It`s a win win situation for the distributor/studio & for the home video fan.

I just saw it for the first time. A beautiful animation with a look all made for 3D. Film is NATIVE 1.85:1 3D and we didn't even have versions in the cinema in Brazil, thanks to covid_19, and even less in BD3D in Europe. The last one was Dois Irmãos released in June 2020 in Europe and I believe the pandemic is related to that, since dear Disney thinks she is earning little and needs to cut costs! ☹️

"BLU-RAY™ 2D + DVD", for goodness sake... it's almost like purposefully offensive to 3D fans, lol. I guess it's good they're satisfying the huge demand for trading cards though...

Default 3D hope

Interestingly an Australian company Random Space Media, is running limited edition 3D Blu-rays and one Of their first titles is a Fox title “Jumanji 2’ (mine just shipped today) but one can only hope that if these Limited editions are successful they might be able to convince Disney to let them run a few Disney Pixar releases. Let’s hope.

Umm... we know about Random Space Media, it's been a month since we know them by the way.
It's not a Fox title, it's a Sony title.
It's not one of their first titles, they've been releasing stuff in Australia for months.
Yes, they are successful and RSM has acknowledged it.
Right now they're focusing on Sony titles and it'll be a while when they release Disney films on 3D Blu-ray, unless they change their mind thanks to the supportive Facebook posts.

The question really is if Disney will let a third party release or author a new disc. Afaik, in the past when they have let boutique labels release their stuff, they were just using existing releases and adding fancy packing. It’s hard to imagine Disney letting another label release their content on a new format, but I hope I’m wrong!

RSM has released Disney and MCU films, but on 4K and HD Blu-ray.
They have just started releasing 3D titles but as I've said earlier they're focusing on Sony right now, so the success of Jumanji TNL should be some solid proof that there is a good market for 3D Blu-ray, and it should drive them to release Disney and hopefully Paramount stuff on 3D Blu-ray as well.

Yeah but the Disney discs they’ve released already exist is my point, at most they got to make new packaging for them. I’m just very cynical Disney would ever let another company make their own discs for their content is all.

The Sony discs they’ve released also already existed…prior to Jumanji: The Next Level 3D. It wasn’t released on 3D Blu-ray anywhere prior to RSM’s release, which evidences that they’ve got some pull that other vendors don’t. Maybe that pull stops at Sony before it ever reaches Disney, but we shouldn’t be so defeatist that we don’t ask them to try.

This is now getting a theatrical release in China on August 20th, which has become the largest theater market in the world. I'm sure it's a long shot, but if it does well there could that possibly make it more likely it gets a 3D release down the line? Do people in China watch 3D Blu-rays?

I’ve heard on this forum that there is no market for physical media in mainland China, even for 2D content. They have theaters, streaming, and virtually nothing else. The last Chinese feature to be released on 3D Blu-ray was Long Day’s Journey into Night, and that was only because it was licensed by Kino Lorber.

It's unlikely to make a difference. Mulan, Soul, and Raya and the Last Dragon all played in 3D in China and have no Blu-ray 3D anywhere.

China does produce 2D and 3D Blu-rays, mostly as limited and collector's edition luxury items. The market for physical media in most of Asia is very small, compared to the U.S.

Luca is not a Chinese feature, so that fact is sort of irrelevant. This is more about Disney ceasing production of Blu-ray 3Ds for their media worldwide, especially since launching Disney+.

The only 3D footage for this film that we can actually get to see and enjoy.
Hopefully we can get the full movie on 3D Blu-ray when "Avatar 2" brings back the 3D hype and new 3D TVs come up.

A 3D trailer for a 3D film? The scooter flying behind the seagull around the 0:56 second mark was pretty fun, some animator knew how to use 3D

Why don't we see these for every 3D film?

Although, I sure would like to get away from the "high-resolution Jimmy Neutron" CGI artstyle, and either get some more realistic styled CGI, or a return to 2D. It seems like Disney is just spitting out these CGI movies left and right nowadays and I hardly remember any of 'em. Is it just me or do they not have the staying power of the Disney animated films of yesteryear?

I thought the art style in this was absolutely sumptuous and the story was beautifully simple and wholesome. Different strokes I guess.

Pretty much every CG movie nowadays is doing this same artstyle. Over a decade of using the same mold, just making it higher res as tech gets better.

The style gets "uncanny valley" to me as the backrounds go for increased realism as the CGI gets better but the characters retain the stylized look, it makes them look like living baby dolls.

But if they can't/won't break the mold, if they can keep making 3D effects that are designed well enough that they work even with the junky anaglyph glasses that I bought off of Amazon, as that scene with the birds and the scooter does in Luca, that would be a big improvement.

Well typically the uncanny valley look is far more risky with non-stylised characters. That’s why Polar Express has aged so poorly while Shrek, released three years earlier, has aged better. I know what you mean about the backgrounds being hyper realistic in some ways but they are still highly stylised to me, just with an insane level of detail. I think modern Pixar movies (and a lot of modern animation studios) look gorgeous.
