There are many far better examples of the genre already available. These films are when acrobatics and gadgetry entered the fray; the beginning of the end. They're still fun, but far from being top shelf westerns.

This, spaghettis had peaked by the time of the first Sabata, they're fun films and a lot better than some of the other drek churned out around that time. Van Cleef made much better films like The Big Gundown, Death Rides a Horse etc.

Been on a blitz lately of Spag'Wests I haven't seen yet, and just saw The Grand Duel a couple days ago - these are a no-brainer.

The original Sabata is a classic. I think I have a cropped cheapie dvd of the 2nd one but can't recall if I ever watched it... Don't think I've seen the third one where Van Cleef returns, though I may be mistaken as I have thousands of discs lying around and my memory is starting to betray me at my age.

Haven’t seen the 2nd film, but Return of Sabata is excellent, like it better than most the 1st

So is someone else in the US getting the rights to a box now that Kino's discs are on their way out?

Return of Sabata was in the book 50 Worst Films Of All Time (1978), so it's as good as Last Year at Marienbad or Jamaica Inn or The Omen...but not as good as Plan 9 From Outer Space, which didn't make the book!

I wonder if that list is available online, "worst" lists are usually a trove for fiilms I end up loving.

I think they just stuck that one on to get attention. And most of the book, come to think of it.

It didn't get a strong critical reception when it first came out. Even those that had positive things to say, said them with reservations. Only later on did it really garner the reputation it has now.

How would folks think Sabata compares to Sartana? Are these better than the Sartana movies?

The Sabata films are directed by Gianfranco Parolini who directed the first Sartana film.

The Sabata films are slightly more comedic than the Sartana films, and you get the bonus of LVC being a bad ass.

In essence, I suspect they'll be more about the style than the substance. Wonder if I should pass on the booklet and wait for a cheaper standard release. Getting the 5-film Sartana set standard edition for 20 quid has spoiled me.

Sartana is the james bond of the spaghetti westerns
Cool intro and great gadgets through the movies especially light the fuse sartana is coming
And a great bodycount to top

Sabata hey it's lee van cleef can't go wrong with it.
both man outsmart there targets and there a lot of baddies going for the prce of money
Adios sabata with yul brunner was not a part three of sabata the origenel title was indio black or something like that but to make extra money advertise it as part 3
The movie is great but don't see it as lee van cleef movie it wasn't it was a stand alone movie

Just what happend with the movie django in the same 3 following years like a 100 movies came out with the name django in it just to cash in

In short both great movies that don't disapoint if you like spaghetti westerns

Great that eureka makes this set got my hopes up

Now i can list like a 30 unknown spaghetti i would like to see but i keep quiet now.
