Wow? Really? That title is the biggest lie since The Neverending Story!

Thanks for the spoilers. No need to watch these now.

I may be wrong, but John Lyons has been responding to requests for DDD for a long time now, and I get the sense that he hates DDD so much that he wouldn't release it even if it made sense from a business perspective.

Here's hoping the rights owner comes to their senses and releases a transfer created by Vinegar Syndrome. I don't even care if its in HD. I'd gladly take a DVD or a download of a decent transfer of a theater print at this point. It makes no sense that such an iconic film has been treated so poorly on home video.

Why would he release the second one by itself then? Just to make it further frustrating that the first movie isn’t available?

The fact that he said rights issue this time instead of saying he hates it leads me to believe he'd consider releasing it.

There are plenty of reasons to watch these besides the plot

Yeah, usually he would just say he isn't interested in it. But I guess this sort of explains why no one has released it yet. Say what you want but Debbie Does Dallas is probably the most well known or popular vintage porn title of all time, so other than rights issues, theres no excuse for it not to be on blu ray at this point.

Wikipedia says the first one is in the public domain because the rights holder never attached a copyright notice to prints of the film:

Debbie Does Dallas opened at New York's Pussycat Theater in 1978 and was exhibited without a copyright notice. In 1979, the rights-holder M & A Associates entered into an exclusive worldwide video distribution deal with VCX, whereby VCX agreed to pay M & A an advance and make royalty payments on each sale. Upon receiving a print of the film, VCX president Norman Arno contacted M & A president Arthur Weisberg to request copyright protection. Arno also retained the services of attorneys John Lappen and Peter Berger to combat unauthorized copying of the film. Before litigation could commence VCX was required to add copyright notices to all copies of the film and file registration with the United States Copyright Office; however, VCX could not protect the rights by just adding a notice to the video cassette, since one also needed to be added to the theatrical prints. In 1981, Berger informed Weisberg of the need to add a copyright notice to the prints that had been sent to various theaters but Weisberg refused. Because of Weisberg's refusal to address the problem, both Lappen and Berger concluded the copyright had been lost. In 1982, VCX terminated their contract with M & A and ceased making royalty payments, but continued to distribute the film. In 1987 M & A brought a case against VCX in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan for breach of contract. VCX argued that the contract was void due to M & A's failure to comply with the Copyright Act of 1976. The court found in favor of VCX, and the judge ruled that "Weisberg's actions had thrust the film irretrievably into the [United States] public domain."

If this is accurate, then perhaps that's the answer.

There is a Bluray Version of Debbie Does Dallas in 4:3 format with a Bluray menu and it was released by a private movie collector and I bought one and it is comparable to any 4:3 Bluray. I saw this movie in the theater, one I saw had a longer scene with the girl on the tennis courts and the orgy scene at the beginning was also different from what we are seeing today on DVD releases. The private Bluray version has a slightly different ending to it and it was not on theater version(that I can remember) and it is not on the dvd version. I believe there are alot of different prints for this movie based on its world wide release in 1978!

Yes, it's going to be released by Criterion with a 4K transfer from the original camera negative, a brand new audio commentary by Bambi Woods and a bonus disc of outtakes & deleted scenes.

Sheesh...

On DDD (the original), if the court declared it "public domain", how is there a rights issue? Couldn't anyone with access to a print release it? So it would just come down to who has access to the best print and is willing to use it?

Watched this (DDII) today for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Then I listened to the audio interview with Lisa Cintrice. Got a kick out of the "sharkman" (Richard Dreyfuss) mention.

I asked in the main VS thread, but this may have been a better place.

One curious thing - the cute curly haired red head who you see early on in the lobby of The Ranch I don't think appears again. No further scenes with her, which was disappointing. Would have liked to see more of her. What is her name?
