This was painfully dull, I kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't. All I could think was that it was funny there's a movie called The Worst Person in the World, because Leda absolutely takes that title by a mile..

[Show spoiler]steals a kid's doll, and sees that it clearly is creating trauma, and does nothing? Oh, I guess the same horrible human that abandons her 5 and 7 year old. Makes sense. And here I was thinking initially that she was a a ***** for simply not moving her beach chair at the birthday party scene. Boy was in for a masterclass in *******ry for the rest of the movie.

The Lost Daughter is one of my favorites of 2021 and one of the rare contemporary films which stuck with me long after I saw it on Netflix when it came out. I’m not sure if it caught some viewers and critics on the wrong foot but quite a few things in the film feel different and wholly unique compared to what we see in cinema otherwise. The atmosphere, pace and the slowly simmering and unsteady build-up. Also, all of that adds to a wonderful sense of ambiguity that, at least for me, kept me in the dark until the end. In short, I loved every minute of the film and hoped for a physical media release ever since. The Netflix stream on release day looked horrendous to say the least. In the time since (and before), I still haven’t encountered a worse streaming experience than that. The biggest Lego Duplo macroblocking, mushy blacks and simply everything you don’t want and expect on a then-65 inch TV with top internet speed.

Anyway, I hoped for a Criterion BD / UHD ever since (the film is tailor-made for them) but until now, sadly nothing materialized.

I immediately ordered a copy, although lowered my expectations due to the many bootlegs floating around in Spain and the label putting the film on a BD-25. Although digital feature films of similar lengths can look good on BD-25’s, good encoding is nevertheless required.

My fears have come true - the video master is badly encoded BUT it’s no bootleg.

There’s severe macroblocking in areas that looked even worse on Netflix but it’s no total disaster. This is your standard auto-encoded BD-25 with little care by the authoring house.

It is watchable, far better than Netflix yet far from optimal.
When you select English audio, Spanish subtitles activate and are forced upon you.
I can move them out of frame with my Panasonic player though, so no issues here.

At this point I’m just grateful to have this exceptional film on a physical disc.
