I really hoped this one would get an initial 4K UHD release. Is it Wes or is it Disney that’s the issue? We may never know.

With no special features this will be a difficult purchase.
while I try to be a staunch supporter of physical media, if this goes to streaming in 4K I'd buy it as such, but I wish this was a case like Parasite, where Universal releases their version standard/4K and a deluxe edition from Criterion in a short release window.

Looks like this is getting a 4K streaming release but no HDR, which makes it a tough call between the 4K stream and disc, especially since it was shot on film. Might be one where I get the 4K stream just to see it earlier and then if I like it, pick up an eventual and hopefully 4K Criterion release.

Pre-ordered on Amazon.ca.

I'm hoping it arrives in that wk so I can watch it all warm & cozy with a hot bowl of French onion soup + a mountain of grated Gruyere cheese. If it's a French soup, what's with the Swiss cheese?

I haven't seen this film but as an Anderson fan, I'm excited to. I'll probably just go ahead and pre-order this, so that I can watch it sooner rather than later.

They were probably trying to maximize the size of the main content in the film's primary poster, due to all the small details in there, without cropping, within the aspect ratio of the Blu-ray case, and still have enough vertical room for the film's title to be of a prominent-enough size. The poster itself (meant to be the cover of the titular magazine) has a similar (albeit more interesting) banner strip on the left side.

Left: Blu-ray, Right: Poster

Compared to the poster art though, it does appear that they've potentially messed something up in this one section. It's almost as if they did an edit on a line art layer, moving the corner of the building down, to possibly eliminate the top row. Hopefully they fix this before releasing it.

Top: Blu-ray, Bottom: Poster

You have to see it twice to fully get it. I think this is his best film to date - a masterpiece.

Also this is out on PVOD and I couldn't resist myself, but does anyone know the scene with subs?

This movie has lots of titling and subtitling and it all seems hardcoded to me.

If there is releases in other countries, would it still be hard coded?

There is hardcoded french for example, which I imagine would not fly in France?

I wouldn't bet on it. Hopefully Criterion's eventual release has the artwork preserved.

I don’t think criterion has ever used the poster art on their Anderson releases.

I wonder when it will show up on Disney+. Some Searchlight films (like Antlers) have already made it in some territories.

Might want to check out Walmart B/M stores for this title. my local Walmart put them out on shelf a week early. I got mine tonight. They also put out the latest bond movie No time to Die, last Friday, well ahead of release day. Not that i mind, but aren't there penalty's for selling early? There used to be. Was nice to watch them a week early.

With Bond they had an exclusive early release.

Just got a shipping notice from BullMoose for this. Looking forward to checking it out and expect it will tide me over until the potential Criterion release, hopefully in 4K.

I'd really like to pick this up, but I'm not sure when we can expect this on Criterion Collection? Since it doesn't come with a slip I don't know if I should get it, and at least use the digital code...

How long does CC take to put out their Wes Anderson films usually?

We can only look at the titles that were released theatrically since Criterion started doing Blu-rays.

So:

Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) - Criterion in 2014
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) - Criterion in 2015
Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Criterion in 2020
Isle of Dogs (2018) - Criterion in ????

I watched the first two of three segments last night and this is an interesting one. Might be my least favorite Anderson film so far, but I'll probably have to watch it again at some point. Great cast, but barely used which is something that's become more common in his films. Getting a great actor for a brief cameo has been something I've never really enjoyed.

Unfortunately, it redeems HD only. I picked it up during one of Target's B2G1 sales, so I only paid $13.46, which is fair with no slip and no special features.
