Maybe I watch the wrong channels but has much marketing been done for this? Other than a trailer on YouTube I've seen zero ads, posters in my local theaters or anything. I wouldn't have even seen the trailer if a friend hadn't mentioned it. Seems almost like they are setting it up to fail.

You may not have enjoyed Ready or Not but it did get decent reviews. Scream reviewing close to how it did would be great (doubt it happens though).

Yes, actually the marketing campaign for this has been pretty heavy, it's just that it's mostly targeting social media goers.

Then that would explain it. I'm not at all a heavy social media user.

You would think they would spread out the campaign a bit to try to attract a wider market. I understand an ad on Facebook or whatever is cheaper than other channels. Maybe I'm not their target audience but this is a 25 year old franchise and many of the original fans are now in our 40s or older. Most people I know in that age group aren't big social media users compared to someone in their 20s. Considering the last film is 10 years old someone in their low 20s may have never even seen a scream film. Oh well guess that's why I'm not in marketing 🙂

I've seen the trailer of this a few times in theaters, usually before other horror films. There's also a poster up for it at my theater. I've never seen any of the movies so not really interested in it (same for Halloween). Still, if the PQ is good I might pick up the disc.

Yes the same way as I thought the new Candyman was a reboot, but it's another sequel.

So far, this is only my real complaint. It's obviously minor if they turn out to have made a great movie, but man...if they could have called it almost ANYTHING else. I think it was dumb with Halloween, and it's dumb again here - even just for the fact that for the rest of forever, we are going to have to say "Scream 22" or whatever to differentiate when speaking about the movies.

It's one thing when it's a total remake/reboot, but when it's not...it's just like - why?

It's a crime that the best film in the franchise (Scream 2) is still stuck with that grotty old master.

I could understand it with Rocky Balboa (2006) after Rocky V (1990) because of the 16 year difference and the fact that Rocky V was universally frowned upon and that Stallone wanted to make things right, (although personally I'm a fan of Rocky V but I get why they did it). Ditto Rambo (2008) after Rambo III (1988).

What I don't like is when movies like The Thing (2011) which is a prequel, or Halloween (2018) which is a sequel, re-use the same tittle as there original counterparts giving the strongest of indications that it's going to be a remake, or reboot set in its own universe that has no connection to what came before. It's deceiving, lazy and cheap. By the way fair play to Rob Zombie's 2007 Halloween because that actually was a remake, so calling the 2007 film simply Halloween is obviously fine.
Other annoying examples. Suicide Squad 2 was called The Suicide Squad. Battlefield 5 (video game) was called Battlefield I. Battlefield 6 was called Battlefield V.

That narrative typically applies to major blockbusters. And even then the fake praise is non descriptive. Many of the reactions that came in last night seemed to be real feelings. I guess we’ll find out on Wednesday when reviews roll out.

True, however I know some of the critics who posted their reactions and they are MASSIVE Scream fans. I think the great early buzz is genuine. If a horror movie is bad we usually know even with early reactions.

I almost wish Scream (2022) was a remake or reboot. At least then, regardless of the movie's quality, calling it Scream would be justified

I'm not a big fan of sequels basically being given the exact same same as their predecessors, but I can completely understand why it's done. Cinemagoers are more likely to show up to Scream than they are Scream 5, which makes them feel like they have to play catch up (especially when Scream 4 underperformed).

It's not like the difference between Scream 3 and Scream 4 was 20 or 30 years, and it's not like the Scream brand was long forgotten about or toxic by 2011. If anything kept people away contributing to Scream 4's average box office numbers it was the screenplay and directing that a lot of critics and general movie goers had. The other reason was the poor marketing.

I personally love Scream 4 and unpopular opinion alert consider it superior to Scream 2 let alone Scream 3.

List your reasons as to why you don't consider the upcoming "Scream" to not to be a lazy marketing ploy..
