I got the impression of that look from the trailer that FM put out, and figured since no one raised an issue, that perhaps that was the intended look. It definitely appears to be the usual gamma imbalance you find with some releases (often Asian films from what I've noticed). On the other hand, the Taiwana BD looks a little too harsh in terms of contrast. Film Movement releases have had poor compression and encoding in the past unfortunatel. It's probably best to reach out to Film Movement and see what they say.

The weird thing is that, on the caps with the review here, the letterboxing bars are normal black on the Film Movement disc.

However, on my own disc, the letterboxing bars were a milky charcoal gray, suggesting the entire disc suffered from this gamma problem, not just the video transfer of the movie itself.

I really don't think it's intended, it doesn't look like anything that could be done with organic film in 1991, it looks like a digital error in the master.

I agree, the Taiwan BD doesn't look ideal either. It definitely looks too contrasty.

I was really hoping this would be a beautiful new transfer, but it definitely has problems.
