Haven't read the book, but the '47 movie takes the masochistic edge off the story with an "uplifting" epilogue that slightly lessens the experience. It's still a great movie, but the Del Toro versions ends exactly where the earlier film should have, and it's a marvellously bitter pill of a conclusion.

Oh man this movie was so delightfully disturbing. A haunting experience and a gem of a movie. This will look stunning on 4K. Thanks Disney for releasing this on 4K Blu-Ray.

No, they’re both really dark. The only thing that lightens the ‘47 flick a bit is a Hays Code approved beat at the very end, but it’s still very bleak.

I've not seen this, but I'm very pleased that the 4K UHD is coming. I wonder if it was part of del Toro's contract? Regardless, I hope this means that Death on the Nile is coming, as well.

This is excellent news. It looked wonderful in the theater, and if there was a recent film just crying out to be seen in 4K... it's this one.

Death on the Nile is 20th Century Studios so we have a better chance at a 4K disc. Although it also depends on how much Disney wants to distance itself from Hammer.

Agreed... this is one of those titles that I probably won't just grab and watch at random, sort of have to be in the right mood to watch, but I really liked it and loved the story and acting, and that to me it's 'worth' having even if I know that I may only watch 1, 2,...4 more times in my life.

I hope so... but it's Disney, my expectations are lower than low. The fact that it is coming out at all in 4K is already shocking! Fingers crossed.

Honestly think what pushed this release has more to do with the fact The Shape of Water was such a success theatrically and in home video sales, plus awards heavy. And it's the same distributor, so my take is that they wanted to keep it loyal for Del Toro. Thankfully from TSoW's success were getting this 4K.

A UK 4K release should be confirmed a month after it comes out in UK cinemas.

Excellent, gorgeously rendered film that approves on an already great adaptation in the 1947 version, but now with the novel's bleaker ending fully intact. And Cate Blanchett crushes it as Lilith Ritter - so fun to see her as a proper femme fatale. Day 1 purchase.

I haven't read the novel, but it sounds like the new version is truer. I think I actually prefer the 1947 movie just because it's less bleak and the violence and freak show stuff is toned down. It's the same basic story beats. The Del Toro movie is more exquisitely designed and realized. The characters are allowed to be less likeable as well. It's more uncompromising. But I can stomach the 1947 movie better.

Dawn of the Discs on twitter has posted the listing too. Are they legit and right about whats going to be released ?
