This is the same Stanley Long, incidentally, who photographed Michael Reeves's THE SORCERERS (1967).

![]() Seriously though, these types of films from this era just make you feel sad. The Carry On films were cheeky and sometimes sexy in a relatively innocent way (though even they later succumbed with Carry On Emanuelle), but most films of this ilk feel tawdry and you sense the desperation of the actors involved. As someone who's only seen Adventures of a Taxi Driver, it's not even well shot. It was clearly filmed on 16MM and looks over-exposed... no pun intended. Edited: According to IMDb, it was shot on 35MM... could've fooled me ; it looks grainy as hell and isn't very sharp... it looks muddy looking. Last edited by indisposed; 01-30-2022 at 02:18 PM. |

Looks ok to me. It was a cheap and quick production and wouldn’t win any Best Cinematography awards, but it’s perfectly fine.

It might interest you to know that Kim Newman listed the Mary Millington Collection as one of his favorite releases in Sight and Sound's best of 2020 poll.

Speaking as someone who found the John Ford boxset the least enjoyable thing Indicator has put out, I'm keeping an open mind as to whether this will top that.
I've no problem with Indicator covering a wide variety of stuff; I recommend the latest Chasing Labels podcast with co-founders of Indicator/Powerhouse John Morrissey, and Sam Dunn, where they discuss the thinking behind this release and initial reactions to it. |

When you look at the sort of stuff they were putting out at the beginning, it does look to me that they are struggling for material now. Imprint in Australia are blowing them out of the water. |

I was commenting that the films were poor. I agree it was an excellent box set with a nice book, great transfers and very interesting documentary.

Pity BOTH "Wild Lovers" & "Party Pieces" (colour transfer plus some shots are shortened) were sped up from 18fps to 24fps compaired to their previous releases, on 88's release of Eskimo Nell & the Simply Media release of the Millington doc respectively.

I love the 1970s sex comedies. The Ups and Downs of A Handyman is good fun as well.

I just bit the bullet and preordered the set…
…not before selling my DVD set that I picked up for a mere £2 for £15. That covered nearly half the cost! Kev W |

AU PAIR GIRLS is a favorite of mine. The title theme is insanely catchy.

Watched the first 2 in this set - all I can say is thank heavens for Adrienne Posta for giving both films a bit of a kick up the a*se when she is on screen. I thought Christopher Neil was the better of the two leads at the 4th wall-breaking shtick, but there's a pretty big divide between how cheeky and lovable these films would like us to think their male leads are vs how they actually come across (to me at least).
No problem with Indicator's package (fnrr fnrr) giving these films some much-needed contextualisation, but ultimately they are no better than I expected them to be, and I'm hoping Indicator don't make too much of a habit of delving into this corner of British cinema. |
