Even though Michael Bay sucks and you could say his style is very derivative of Tony Scott's Simpson/Bruckheimer movies, there is a certain brash shamelessness about Bay's movies that make them very clearly Michael Bay joints. I hate him as a filmmaker but I do sort of admire his no holds barred "f**k yo momma" approach to making shit blow up on screen.

I think the term is too broad and applies to most filmmakers these days. Very rarely does a director make a movie that isn't distinctively there own anymore.

George Lucas with Star Wars. He broke new ground with that film, along with his very talented team/film crew/talents.

Sam Raimi, Evil Dead.

Drums is great! I'll check out your blogspot. Hopefully I'll find just the right kick in the hiney there to get me Rollin' on that Ford at Fox set.

I hope for your sake Hamilton Books can stock up on that one again. It was a helluvu deal at $25.

He's a very modest man.

If I'm understanding the definition correctly (which I might not be), the first name that popped into my head was Terry Gilliam.
It would be hard to blind watch a Gilliam film and not know that it's Gilliam, such is his influence and fingerprints on everything I've seen from him.

john ford and many old fashion directors would say that because auteur sounds too artsy and too french for those type of guys, but ford was definitely an auteur.

an auteur is someone who leaves a particular and recognizable imprint on a film, and carpenter definitely does that, as ford did. Vidor too.

I love a belgian surrealist whos made movies like les levres rouges, malpertuis, monsier hawarden: Harry Kümel. Obviously Federico Fellini, and I mean obviously because hes one of the few world creators in cinema. He truly created a personal world full of freaks, voluptuous women, aimless losers,

As for modern ones David Lynch and PTA definitely

Jeff Nichols.

Consistent both in his approach and his style. Nothing feels over the top or out of place. And he sticks to his guns. His Quiet Place spinoff had my interest but he left that to do an original sci-fi (probably with Michael Shannon showing up).

Definitely.

I would add Denis Villenueve.

The Wachowskis. I know that may be controversial, but The Matrix concept is so original and conceptually complex that I think they deserve the title for those films alone.

I don't know. He's very meticulous with details and there is certainly a kind of visual consistency in his films, but if I didn't know it was him going in, I don't think there is a unique style that would make me recognize it as his film.
