For once, I'd hope it's the Criterion source since it actually sounds better than what was on the MGM SE DVD/Arrow Blu.

Coupled with the revisionist Long Goodbye release I guess they're still case-by-case. They need start releasing these UHDs so I know which ones I need to add for that free shipping!

The SOTL color issue is definitely not “minor”. It also only has a downmix of the terrible 5.1 remix. Plenty of screwed up 2K discs(like Bitter Moon and Rich and Strange), too.

Plenty of screwed up 2K discs that haven't even been mentioned on this forum. Half of their Dark Side of Cinema box sets have out of sync audio or HORRIBLE noise reduction that makes the voices sound like they're coming out of a tin can.

Let alone their release of Pool of London is from a FRICKIN DATED PAL MASTER, not the new Studio Canal master they released the year prior. Of course I'm sure SC gave them the wrong master, but no one caught it during QC? Quite pitiful.

I could understand someone not catching the SOTL issue (not that I think it's fine), but not noticing a sped-up PAL master with wrongly pitched audio? That's bad. Real bad.

Aside from the "minor color issue", THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS also has a 2.0 downmix of the anemic 5.1 remix instead of the far superior original theatrical Dolby Stereo mix (which is included on the Criterion Blu-ray).

EDIT: I see BluProofie beat me to this with their post above.

Kino's Blu-ray release of Todd Hayne's POISON is also a disaster. I got rid of that one, it's unwatchable with a frequently stretched and distorted image to make it "fit" a 16:9 screen.

If this looks as good as Some Like it Hot in DV, it will be great!

I like the finale, especially the way it's set to the cheery song "Better Things," performed by Fountains of Wayne:

I felt it was a very clear reference to the way the Clinton campaign integrated pop songs into their aesthetic, and used Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac as its theme song at big events.

I thought using such a cheery song as musical counterpoint for the final action scene was a brilliant choice, and I'd buy a UHD just for that sequence.

That said, I'm not sure I agree the film is underrated. I think it's pretty fairly rated as a noble failure.

It was a bold choice to remake such a masterpiece, but I don't they improved on it in any way, and I think they made one choice that damaged the storyline a LOT:

[Show spoiler]Giving the final portion of the Raymond (Laurence Harvey/Liev Schreiber) character arc to Marco (Denzel) was a HUGE mistake, in my mind. I get that it gives Denzel a lot more to play in the finale, making him the intended shooter, and I get that it allows Rosie to be more active, by taking on Marco's role, chasing down the sniper in the auditorium, but I think it ruins the ending. Marco running through the auditorium and finding Raymond, realizing they're two sides of the same tortured man, only to watch him shoot himself, is really powerful, and I don't think having Rosie find Marco in the same way, and having him not shoot himself, is nearly as powerful.

Yes! I love that sequence. Demme did a similar thing with ‘American Girl’ playing over the intro to Buffalo Bill’s next special lady.

Even ‘Goodbye Horses’ is quite a bouncy tune to play over a fella wearing a skin suit and doing the old tuck. The incongruence of the music elevates the horror somehow.

I wish Demme had made more thrillers because he nails the genre. I really think if people can watch his Manchurian on its own terms and forget that it’s a remake they’ll see a top class thriller with an incredible cast, and one of Denzel’s finest performances.

Bursting to get it on UHD.

Shocking, daring, thrilling and mesmerizing, The Manchurian Candidate is a mindblower! Directed by the legendary John Frankenheimer (Seven Days in May, The Train, Seconds, Ronin) and featuring an all-star cast, including Angela Lansbury (The Mirror Crack’d) in an Oscar-nominated performance (Best Supporting Actress, 1962), this eerily prescient masterpiece “may be the most sophisticated political satire ever made” (Pauline Kael). When a platoon of Korean War G.I.s is captured, they somehow end up at a ladies’ garden club party. Or do they? Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra, Von Ryan’s Express) can’t remember. As he searches for the answer, he discovers threads of a diabolical plot orchestrated by the utterly ruthless Mrs. Iselin (Lansbury) and involving her war hero son (Laurence Harvey, A Dandy in Aspic), her senator husband (James Gregory, The Silencers) and a secret cabal of enemy leaders. Janet Leigh (Touch of Evil) and Henry Silva (Code of Silence) also play pivotal parts in “one of the best and brightest of modern American films” (Roger Ebert).

Yeah, all of those are legacy extras.

The cover appears to be based on this French poster, but now Kino has changed it to a sort of hot pink background instead of purple, and made them greener for reasons.

edit: Here's an edit I did to make it look closer to that poster. I personally prefer it over what Kino is using
