Fully agree. I thought about ordering, but I'm not sure anymore after the comments about the booklet. Such films bring back certain magic of childhood, and it is woefully that the distributor did not appreciate this. I researched this topic in college and used the source https://phdessay.com/free-essays-on/my-hero/ as a template to follow while writing my own paper. And I can say with confidence that the real heroes remained in these films for me, and I don’t perceive modern adaptations of comics.

HERO is a bit of a mess. A lush expensive production suffering from crude comedy, OTT acting (Yuen Wah is horribly miscast) and some ridiculous gore that is contradicted by the characters being perfect fine in the next scene. And it has the fakest horse in Asian cinema since that toy one in FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD...

Finally decided to pick this up and was pleasantly surprised to find it arrive with the booklet and slipcover. The booklet was certainly interesting, definitely felt like a fan of early Shaw trying to say something nice about a time period where they weren’t really making films the same way anymore. I didn’t see it as a slam on the film as much as they weren’t as into this new style.
Having said that, I found this film to be a blast. I am definitely not as into early Shaw stuff as my favorites all stem from the late 70s/early 80s. I also wasn’t that into Boxer from Shangtung as I found it slow, over-long, and only really enjoyed the great end fight. I liked that while this was called a remake, it had very little in common with the original besides the premise. My biggest gripe though is the often disjointed editing, it felt like this was originally longer and they rushed over some plot points with some fast editing and occasional narration. Aside from these moments though, I enjoyed all the characters and the action. This definitely isn’t for everyone with its mix of comedy and violence, but those are two things I find go together like peanut butter and jelly. ![]() |

Quicky question: Soooo, is this actually a SHAW film. From what I read on IMDB, I am missing the connection outside of it being a remake of one of their older films.
For example, does the SHAW BROS logo appear at the start of the movie? It's the last of the 88 10 Shaw flicks and I am debating snagging it. |

At any rate, if I snag this it would be what caps off my 50 film Summer of Shaw film festival that will start in the 1966s with Come Drink With Me. So, just over 30 years of Shaw (though admittedly a pretty huge cap from the mid-80s to 1997)
