The first Death Wish is the superior movie, imo. It also sets up Charles Bronson's character and a bit of the back story that is touched on in the sequel. I would say yes, but if you know the story it's not necessarily going to make part 2 completely unintelligible or anything.

Yeah, it’s not like DW2 requires seeing the original to follow (not exactly a complicated backstory, and whatever minimal past links to the 1st movie are explained in exposition), but I’d watch the original first just because it’s a better movie, and a terrific 70’s vigilante movie in its own right.
Blu Ray of the first is a ten-spot on Amazon right now. |

Got my copy today. Very pleased with the 1080p transfer. Definitely an improvement over the SF release. The only thing that bugs me about this release is that they cropped the reverse artwork pretty bad compared to the SF. I thought that was more of a SF thing. Otherwise great release.

What the hell is taking so long caps-a-holic??? Need the caps from the 1080p disc, please. And WTF; wasn't there caps from NSM Records release in there, so where is it???
When it ultimately appears at caps-a-holic, I do hell hope that it won't be 4K disc only. |

Having watched it last week, it's definitely a gorgeous remaster and handily bests all previous presentations. The caveat being, the encoding isn't exactly great and it does on occasion, shit the bed (you can see it tank hard in this screenshot) -
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...192741&i=1&l=0 If an international label wanted to take it on and give it an encode worthy of the remaster, i'd be interested because there's definitely room for further improvement. But as it stands i'm still happy to see it looking so vibrant and wouldn't cry if this was its last hurrah on physical media. |

There's a lot of discussion on the boards about double dips and whether or not mainstream studio titles are what the boutique labels should be focusing on. I agree, to an extent, that Blu-ray premieres are more exciting but when you have labels like VS producing gorgeous remasters like Death Wish II, those concerns completely evaporate for me. I'm not hoping they focus more on studio stuff - just saying that it's awesome when these films get the definitive treatment.

Decided to get with a few VS Partner label titles from the March line-up, VS's release of Death Wish II.
Going to jinx this, but I hope to still be able to get a copy of Umbrella's double feature Blu-ray of Death Wish II and Death Wish 3 with the lossless audio (for the exclusive extras and the Greek VHS cut of Death Wish II). |
