the only downside is the life of an oled. but i just read an article the other day about extending its life. lets just hope sony can get that 27inch on the market this year.

I'll buy one for sure. I own a Mitsubishi front projector right now and have nothing but good things to say about it. I can only imagine how great that proposed 65" FullHD Laser set will look. Only time will tell.

Yes. The limited lifespan of the organic materials used for the screen is its biggest disadvantage. It deteriorates too quickly. Hopefully researchers can slow that process in the future.

Laser faces an uphill battle. RP sets just aren't as profitable for manufacturers and don't possess the "cool" factor of flat panels. With Sony dropping out of the market with their (excellent) SXRD sets, it seems more and more manufacturers want to focus on flat panels exclusively -- and customers by and large are going with them.

OLED on the other hand, definitely has everything going for it. It works and is available (albeit only an 11" model), though larger screens have been demo'd. The biggest problem with OLED is getting the size up to the 40-60" range where the real profit margins can be made. That said, moving into the PS monitor market with professional 20"-27" monitors would likely be a very profitable market for OLED as they get the technology where it needs to be for larger monitors.

The supposed death of RP sets is a weak argument. I don't think Mitsubishi has any problem whatsoever being the only manufacturer of said type TV's.

We should get some better info on the sets in May. Thats when Mits has their line show. Lets hope they actually get it out the door and it lives up to the promise.

For the life of me I will never figure out what is so damn cool about hanging a TV on a wall. Give me picture quality over form factor any day. I have a great looking TV stand anyway.

I actually feel that same way. I don't care whether it's flat or a little bulkier as long as it gives me the best picture possible.

I personally think OLED is the way of the future. It's brighter than LCD, and thinner, and more energy efficient, and more expandable, and cheaper to manufacture, whereas laser technology isn't really any of those things.

Laser is the now
OLED is the future

You ask me, I have no idea what would replace OLED as a physical device besides a hologram display. It's absolute perfection (Minus the life expansion)

You're actually wrong in many points. Laser TV's are extremely light in weight, have very bright pictures and is cheaper to manufacture than any of the technologies currently on the market. They're also more efficient than LCD's, plasmas and DLP projo TV's.

And I don't know where you get that OLED is cheaper to manufacture than LCD. The 11" Sony OLED TV is selling for $2000.

I mean OLED technology in general. But since it's a new technology (especially for TVs), you get the ludicrous prices such as the $2499 for the 11" Sony OLED.

Hey xtop, here are some actual pics of the CES 2008 demoing of Mitsubishi's 65" Laser beauty. That thing is a sexy beast if you ask me:

http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006226.html

I'm getting one when it hits the market.

Also, that thing is almost is thin as flat panel LCD's or plasmas.
