What a lovely and simple story about boyhood friendship with an ending that, despite the manipulations of the plot, will still earn your tears fair and square.

RIP Renfro, this was one of your very best (the rest of the cast is also excellent, but he just wrenches the heart outta you).

I hope it’s a decent transfer, at least.
I remember 12 years old me holding onto my mom comforting her in the theater as she was balling at the final scene. I also remember the audience gasping when Dexter's mom intervened between Renfro's character and his mom.

How is the image quality of the Asian blu-ray? Could you post some screenshots?

Can't do screenshots, sorry. It's a bit soft/gauzy, but I remember that even seeing it theatrically. I'm pretty pleased with how it looks compared to the full-screen DVD.

There is already a Japanese Region A BD. The transfer is as good as you can expect from a 1995 film. It was more popular in Japan, so they've had a widescreen dvd and a blu-ray with a nice transfer for a while now.

I'm buying the American blu-ray anyway because I guess I collect Cures, it is in my Top 5. For the longest time, the only widescreen edition that existed was the LD. If you ever had a best pal that you still think about years later then this movie will hurt.

No. This movie is scheduled to be released this Tuesday, but my Amazon order still says We will email you when we have an estimated delivery date.

This has me nervous.

Fear not! I just got an email today estimating I'll get it on Wednesday. Not a shipping notice, but a change-of-delivery-date notice (originally it said it would be here Tuesday).

Yes, I got my e-mail too. They must have gotten their shipment a day later than expected and can now expect to have them delivered by Wednesday.

So glad.

I pre ordered August 1st and I’m getting told it won’t arrive until October 17th. I can wait longer but I thought with such an early pre order that I’d get it on the 4th. We shall see what happens.

This is Universal in the US (hence Mill Creek's release having the Universal branding), while MGM owns international rights through Island Pictures (The JP Blu has MGM branding on it). Both BDs should be the same transfer sans swapped Universal and MGM logos at the start.

Lol, I just came here to say the same thing. I've waited long enough I won't complain about another week... I just hope the disc is good!

I too preordered as soon as it was announced and initially got delayed til the 17th. Online the order says Oct 13th-15th lol.. I think the Japanese disc looks great. It's got 2.0 surround. I can't enjoy the DTS 5.1 on this one unless I hook up an old glitchy player that converts to Dolby and then it wouldn't be upscaled to 4K.. and the "retro VHS packaging" is just a slipcover/o-ring so it's $10 for a silly o-ring for me.. but still, I'm supporting the release of great but somewhat overlooked films.

Got mine this morning! In-laws are coming in this afternoon so I only got to watch the first 30min, but I wanted to tell everybody to keep their expectations low for the picture. It's an old master and looks like it has some DNR in spots, but it's undeniably an upgrade from the DVD (which I'm pretty sure was cropped to 1.33:1). I don't have the Japanese disc to compare it to, but I think it looks comparable to an HDTV rip I watched many years back. It's not the deluxe treatment this movie deserves, but at least it's a step up!

Wow. What a shame. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with ANY upgrade, no matter how small of one.

My copy was only mailed out TODAY with a delivery date of THURSDAY, which is weird because I have Amazon Prime.

Mine shipped last night too, with a Tuesday delivery date, but these often arrive Monday instead. (edit: not this week though, danged postal holiday) It all depends on how far you are from a warehouse that had it in stock, but yes, it shouldn't be more than 2 days with Prime. They stopped showing the 'guaranteed delivery' during checkout since they failed so often.

And by the way, it currently shows as in stock. Being slightly irritated with Amazon, I decided to go ahead and order a replacement/exchange for my Paramount Presents: Vanilla Sky, which arrived recently with the o-ring crumpled on one side, yet the case was fine. I was gonna just let it go, but heck, that's part of the collectible nature of it, with the fold-out poster. That one shipped for next day, which is today. Currently being 'processed at carrier facility' but it's in town.

Got it today after all. I guess the postal service does Amazon deliveries on holidays just like they do on Sundays.

First thing I noticed is the only audio track is DTS Master Audio 2.0, not the advertised 5.1 lol And I'm having trouble noting any difference from the Japanese disc. Possibly duller colors/less saturation but my guess is it's the exact same transfer.

Possible Blu-Ray Review incoming?
