56 DVD’s that can stay packed away now and more space on my shelves for when I can start putting things back up.

They probably wouldn't need more than that, given their track record. Adding a fifth disc would make each set 4 discs of 10 eps and 1 disc of 9, but that probably wouldn't be needed.
It's doable, but it's not ideal. I'm with Mysticwaterfall, six discs would be optimal if they're not gonna go the same route as Japan and put them on 8 discs per set.

The Italian set looks to be 7 or 8 discs too.

I think anyone would prefer more discs with higher video bitrate, but UY seems to be an extremely niche title in the US compared to Italy and Japan. This seems like one of those titles where they might target an average video bitrate of 16.99 Mbps, which could mean 4x BD50 or maybe 4xBD50 + 1xBD25 even if contents could fit on 4x BD50 (iirc happened with Astro Boy which uses 175 GB data. For safety reasons I guess?)

KOR, Gunbuster, City Hunter, Lupin and Now Lum TV as well? Jeez Disco are devastating my anime bucket-list! Just get Maison Ikkoku already and kill it completely please!

Previous Japanese audio only, no extra features TV shows that Discotek has released have been on 3 discs per every two cours, like the 80s Tetsujin 28 show. So about 5-6 discs per pack and four packs would be about right

I've got some more but with UY and tons of Macross coming off the books, Maison is probably my most wanted now. Yawara probably after that.

The big question is; will people actually come out and buy Mason Ikkoku if it gets a BD? I mean I know we all will, but will people who aren't that familiar with Rumiko Takahashi? Will the average anime fan?

I don't know...

Isn't Maison Ikkoku trapped in licensing hell because of a few songs used in the show? I think Justin confirmed that last year.

Lol good caveat because I'd definitely be pre-ordering it.

I *think* Rumiko's name would be enough to make it viable but obviously it's no Ranma or Inuyasha.

I know Rin-ne wasn’t much of a hit with U.S. fans.

Yes. Also the show bombed extremely hard for VIZ Media (they're never touching the anime ever again), the print runs of the final box sets were so low they sold out quickly after release. It would probably do much better now than back then, and there's no dubbing costs to worry about, but it likely won't do gangbusters if it manages to get rescued.

The Japanese Blu-ray sets must have sold pretty well as they have only gone up in price even though they got a rerelease. Still kicking myself for waiting on part 1.

As I've said before, I think MI would be the perfect Kickstarter. The fans for it are passionate enough to back it and the funding would take away the risk. I would certainly pledge in a heartbeat, MI is one of my all time top 10, I've watched the whole thing at least 5 times.

I'd back it for sure.

VIZ is almost done re-releasing the manga in very nice updated editions. At least there is an option for those who want to experience the series. I picked up the first 4 volumes but ended up dropping it. I'd rather watch the anime and need to be picky about what I buy for manga because I don't have much space. 10 signature edition volumes take up way too much space and they aren't cheap either.

It's 2022. The average anime fan isn't buying Blu-Rays, or watching anything older than Attack on Titan outside of series they grew up with as kids.

Discotek has absolutely released material more obscure than a dubbed Rumiko Takahashi adaptation.

Absolutely, it's been OOP for over a decade and it's one of Rumiko Takahashi's seminal works. It also boasts a competent English dub from Ocean Studios too. There's no reason for it not to succeed especially if it were to end up in Discotek's capable hands someday.

There's no reason for a Kickstarter though. A Blu-ray already exists in Japan. So there's no need to pay for a restoration. As I mentioned above, it is one of Rumiko Takahashi's seminal works and it has a decent enough English dub. You've got name recognition alone, plus the folks who only ever watched InuYasha or Ranma 1/2 in English, can get into it too. The only thing you can hope to gain from a Kickstarter is better packaging, but with 96-episodes, a movie, and a few OVAs to store, it could get pretty expensive.
