Whatever.
I get your concerns as the original really is creepy when thought of as a one off with no backstory and left open ended...

But they did a really great job of
Of recapturing that vibe with the sequel...

Yeah, yeah, I'm excited for these three new films, blah blah blah. But can I just say how much the first sentence of Bloody-Disgusting's article bugs me?

Widely considered one of the great home invasion slasher films of all time..
Is it? CAN it be, considering how heavily (and obviously) it borrowed from "Ils" (Them)? Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy the movie, I truly do. But as someone who actually saw Ils first, I couldn't help but think to myself: "This is basically a remake," for much of the duration of my first seeing The Strangers. That's why I kinda prefer Prey at Night. While the first one had that wonderfully tense tone throughout the entire movie, the sequel was a little more relaxed, and less traditional, allowing for some very awesome, stylistic shots that would have probably felt out of place in the first. Also, PAN had Martin Henderson, who's rather low-key gorgeous.

I mean the article says, "One of the greatest..." Not THE greatest. But you're right it is very similar to Them for sure.

Just blind bought Prey at Night based on all the cool things I've heard about it. It sounds right up my alley (80's style slasher, nuff said). I enjoyed the trailer too. I thought the first one was alright. It was effective to a point but took too long to get in gear IMO. Hopefully I'll enjoy Prey at Night and this becomes a cool new horror series.

I like the first two, so a sequel would be fine, but three sequels simultaneously? that's insane

‘The Strangers’ – Renny Harlin Directing At Least One of the Upcoming Sequels

Quote:
As we reported yesterday, it looks like THREE new sequels to The Strangers are on the menu, with producer Roy Lee (The Ring, Poltergeist, Blair Witch, IT, Barbarian) telling Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast that “the next three are in production next month.” What can we expect from the third, fourth, and fifth installments in The Strangers franchise, you ask?

For starters, Bloody Disgusting did some digging in the past 24 hours and we have been able to slash up some more exclusive intel. We’re now being told that Renny Harlin is on board to direct one if not all three brand new upcoming sequels in The Strangers franchise!

Renny Harlin has a long history in the horror genre, most notably directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988. Harlin’s horror credits also include Prison (1987), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), The Covenant (2006), and Devil’s Pass (2013).

Outside the horror genre, Renny Harlin has directed notable films including Die Hard 2 (1990), Cliffhanger (1993), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), and The Legend of Hercules (2014).

Renny Harlin is needless to say a very interesting choice to take over The Strangers franchise, and it’s probably safe to expect that he’ll inject new life and new energy into the saga.

This is a series that should have been a franchise so this is awesome news.

I recently revisited both and remembering thinking the sequel was pretty mediocre but I had a blast on revisit. I actually prefer it over the original. The original has some all time scares but has some goofy parts to it I didn't remember back in 2008.

Not sure about for free (not Amazon, Shudder or Netflix anyway) but it's available on Amazon prime for $3.99 for rent. That's why I just did a blind buy on the blu since it was only $6 including tax right now.

I really like Harlin so fingers crossed for these. The Dyatlov Pass Incident was great.

They waited a decade to make ONE sequel, now suddenly they want to give us three? Better not make them into a shitty, Blumhouse-style "trilogy"...

I hope they go full schlock with these. Prey at Night had a few moments but it felt too low budget and bare bones. If they did a whole movie that was as enjoyable as that pool scene then I'm in.

I don’t think the uk got the blu ray. Might need to buy it from Amazon us.

Yeah I'm not seeing one for the UK either. BTW, my copy arrived today and I just got done watching it. I enjoyed it more than the first one. Some effectively creepy moments.

The first two were filmmakers relatively new to the game that were co-writer/directors who mostly had their own vision for the films they were making (I mean Roberts was obviously iterating on an already-existing property of course, but he was doing it mostly his way.)

Renny Harlin's a straight gun for hire, and he's well past his 80s/90s prime... if we can even call it a prime. My interest in these just took a nice, big hit.

Agreed. This series should be a playground for up and comers. Give me a Giallo inspired Strangers, a found footage Strangers, etc etc. Hiring Renny makes me think these will be pretty uninspired.
