Day one. I still have my hand numbered (3232) and signed VHS of "Coven" along with the "Songs I Know" (Mike Schank) cassette tape, and the DVD of this film. I think there's a Coven t-shirt around here somewhere, too.

Maybe OP can update the first post? It will come in handy when searching for listings on various sites.

Excited to see how this looks in HD…finally!!

I’ve met with Mark numerous times in the Milwaukee area and I can say he’s one of the nicest, most sincere guys you’ll ever meet. I can tell you first hand that his personality and quirks from this movie are legit and sincere. It’s the real deal.

I actually went to the same school for film (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) that Mark edits Coven in. I used the exact same equipment (moviola, splicers etc) that are seen in this movie.

Later in film school, I was able to write for our campus paper and secured an interview with him to discuss some of his acting roles. It turned into a 3 hour conversation BSing about movies and life. His stories and enthusiasm were amazing.

That's pretty disappointing. Christmas with the Kranks, for example, looked better on Prime than on Blu-ray. I wondered why, but I guess now I have my answer. I expect this will have an equally mediocre encode. Should look better than the DVD, though. And maybe once the HD master hits Blu-ray, it'll eventually hit digital.

I'm trying to avoid buying in BDs anymore and stick to UHD, but I pre-ordered this thing super fast.

Might be my favorite documentary in general, no hyperbole.

I haven't tried lately, but generally no.

Bullmoose is usually good with these. I'd imagine MovieZyng as well.

Fun fact: the poster for The Tao of Steve features Donal Logue's head photoshopped onto Mike Schank's body:

Has anyone noticed the version available from VUDU is ever so subtly played at a faster speed? Or at least, I'm pretty confident that it is. Everyone's voices seem higher pitched than they should be.

Not only that but its running time on VUDU is listed as only 101 minutes (01:40:49 to be exact on the video's timeline) whereas other sources list it as having a running time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.

My DVD is currently in storage. Can anyone here pop it in your player and let us know the exact running time? At this point, cover and disc art can't be trusted.

Been a huge fan of this movie since I saw it with friends in 2000. I have also worked with voiceover quite a bit in my career. Between the 20+ years of watching and quoting the flick and my ear trained to listen for anomalies, I just don't enjoy watching the streaming version. The timing is off.

EDIT: Did a little more research. I'm also seeing 104 minutes listed as an approx. running time, going all the way back to its original VHS release and in other places. This is the running time Amazon Prime Video shows but I'm not purchasing it so I can't confirm the length once you actually hit play.

I suspect 104 is the accurate original running time and the VUDU version IS being played slightly faster, resulting in a loss of 3ish minutes and the higher pitched audio.

Annoying. Thanks for your help if you have the DVD and are willing to get the exact running time.

God I hope Sony got this right for blu-ray release. Once I know for sure I'm not crazy on the running times, maybe I'll finally write VUDU about it.

Thanks!

So the VUDU version plays at almost 104% speed. Wow.

Thanks again for taking the time to check.

I wonder if that's all the streaming versions. Let's hope they get the blu-ray right.

25/23.976=1.04

You're 104% looking at a PAL master... odd that it would be the one used on VUDU at all, but especially odd if you're in an NTSC territory.

Yup. Twas digitally purchased and only ever watched in the domestic U.S.

I don't know the particulars of whose servers house these types of things but VUDU at least was given a PAL version of the flick. I guess because of the nature of its Sony Classics deal, it's not a Movies Anywhere title so I don't know how other services show it.

It's always been a thorn in my side.

Sure thing! Glad I could save you the trouble.

If I ever notice it's updated on VUDU, I'll let you know!

It's a shame this is a Sony title but not Movies Anywhere.

My copy is arriving Saturday from Best Buy. Any word on special features yet? I’m assuming it’s the same as the dvd including the commentary and Coven (pronounced like oven man)
