According to this interview, SEC is planning at least four improvement at present.

First, YCrCb color output to be implemented next firmware update planned on December 8. Color accuracy and color range of BR will be improved by this update.

Next, SCE become go to start work for DVD upscaling. This will not to be 'simple upscaling', but aimig at being equal to the upscale processing with an upper-grade PC scaling software.

In addition, a work to convert a 1080/60i image to 1080/60p within internal PS3 process is planned. This is effective for playback of recorded BD-R/BD-RE.

Furthermore, it is confirmed that direct 1080/24p output through HDMI on BR movie titles to be implemented on future update.

Honestly, I wish these update is completed soon.

The "poor man's Blu-ray player" just got more juice.

The cheapest player for years 2006-2009 just got more firepower.

I love it. This is gonna make my next year purchase even more fruitful.

You can now register the BD remote control in [Register Bluetooth® Device] under [Accessory Settings].
o [BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)] has been added as an option under [BD/DVD Settings].
o [Backup Utility] has been added as a feature under [System Settings].
o You can now select the hard disk format method in [Format Utility] and [Restore PS3* System] under [System Settings].
o The method of selecting output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
* Other
o The compatibility of USB devices with PlayStation®2 format software titles has changed. For details on USB devices that can be used with system software version 1.30, select here

why hasn't anyone else noticed this?

176.4KHz PCM (2ch - 7.1ch) is now an option in the AUDIO setup menu.

My 2 channel SACDs now playback at 176.4KHz thru HDMI into my Onkyo TX-SR803 receiver (it only supports up to 96KHz in 5.1 mode...multichannel SACD plays back at 88.2KHz).

Probably because they don't have SACD discs? So any improvement on SACD playback then?

Just in case someone wonders about the 88.2 and 176.4 rates from SACD (instead of 96 and 192), SACD's DSD uses a multiple of 44.1kHz (2,822,400/64 = 44,100). Just telling 'ya

weird that its timing out for you. Are you updating using your ps3, or from a link on this site? Id advise using the ps3 to update.

I'm updating from the PS3 system update. IF it starts the update it gets to about 20% and then I get an error. The last two times I get the error before it even starts to download.

I restarted the PS3 and it download the update just fine. I think the update did sometime to the PS Store. When I quit the store is log me out. Before, when you quit you just went back to the main menu.

There's some more news on a upcoming big firmware update, although it's not planned until March. Here's some news:

During his appearance at a meet-and-greet for semi-official Sony blog ThreeSpeech, Phil Harrison allegedly confirmed a major PlayStation 3 firmware update would be rolled out in March to coincide with the console's launch in Europe (should the delay rumor prove false). According to an unidentified attendee, Harrison outlined some of the features to be included in the update, expanding on SCEE VP of Technology Paul Holman's hint that the update would focus on improving PS3's capabilities as a media center:

* Multi-tasking; includes voice/video-chat while browsing XMB
* Auto-resume for downloads from PlayStation Store
* PSP Remote Play upgrade (access PS3 media via WiFi connection)
* New animations during audio playback
* Enhanced photo album functionality
* Additional XMB display options

While still vague, these features definitely focus on PS3's non-gaming abilities. Anything you'd like to see added to the list?

I certainly want to see the upconversion issue fixed. I know its not a huge deal, but just one less reason HD DVD fanboys have in faulting the PS3.

What I can't get is how they can fault the PS/3 and then forgive it on the XBox 360 add-on.

"Well that only costs $200"

You know, the box says its an "HD DVD player", when it is only an HD DVD external drive. I wonder how many people have purchased one of those as an Xmas present for someone, not realizing they need an Xbox 360 with it?

However, I know someone tried to use this with the PC and it works!

Anyway, I still don't buy the idea of using Xbox360 HD DVD drive to watch HD DVD with component input only, it's a bit waste
