This is great to hear. ARMAGEDDON has its cheesy, goofball charms but its best moments are lesser than DEEP IMPACT’s worst.

I've always loved this film.

I used to watch movies being filmed in DC over the summer, when I was on vacation from school, and this one shot over the summer of 1997, so I watched a bunch of the days of filming. Even got Vanessa Redgrave, my favorite actress, to sign my copy of her book.

Although Spielberg dropped out of directing late in the day, the film has a LOT of him in it, just like the other 1998 film he dropped out of at the last minute, The Mask of Zorro. Both scripts have his fingerprints all over them.

The James Horner score is also stunning.

The 4K UHD BD will, no doubt, be given both the Dolby Vision and the Dolby Atmos treatment. But I did pass along a suggestion for DTS-HD Master on the accompanying standard Blu-ray. I informed them that the film, throughout it's entire North American history on physical media (first DVD, then Blu-ray Disc), had never been given the DTS treatment. So, here's hoping....
About time given how long the 4k Dolby Vision remaster has been on iTunes. A no brainer. Day one!!!

25th anniversary edition for this and 20th anniversary edition for the Core is on my wishlist! Is the supposed digital release a 4K DI?

You summed it up perfectly. Deep Impact has always been a favorite of mine, and that's due in large part to the directing by Mimi Leder. She didn't sacrifice the characters in favor of the destruction.

Although sappy at times (I'm a sucker for sap) I enjoyed this one infinitely more than Armageddon. In fact I remember seeing Armageddon in theaters when it was released and hearing the entire theater sniffling at the end. I'm a sucker for melodramatic movies and often loose it just hearing certain music scores, but I was like "C'mon, you've got to be kidding me", lol.

It's skillfully directed, definitely, but I think that balance is also Spielberg, as much as anyone else. He developed the script, from what I've read, with the intention of directing it. The estranged father/daughter plotline is classic Spielberg.

I think the focus on character, rather than spectacle, also comes from him. I've read both the shooting script (from which a LOT was cut in the finished film) and an earlier draft, from when I think he was still directing it, and while some things changed, the focus on intimate human drama was there all along.

I know a guy who likely thinks that’s grounds to claim Tobe Hooper directed it.

that's funny, i bumped into Michael Bay and asked him what he was working on;
he told me he's overseeing the HDR for Armageddon 4K release next year.

Can't wait for that Michael Bay visits the Criterion Closet video.

What are you talking about here? The Blu-ray is in Dolby TrueHD, which is a lossless compression of the 5.1 master. A DTS version wouldn't be any different, other than taking up more disc space and bandwidth due to its less efficient compression.

The TrueHD ports of the Jack Ryan and Star Trek movies on 4K disc have been more than satisfactory and the Mission Impossible re-encodes from what had been lossy Blu-rays are outstanding.

Also is the Atmos a guess, since the 4K DV streaming version is DD+ 5.1? Paramount's been pretty selective about what they've remixed.

This whole thread is a guess. It shouldn't even be here.

But I guess because "The Discfather" says it's actually happening, that means it must be true.

I haven't heard/read anything about a 4K UHD release of "DAYLIGHT" recently. Last rumor I heard of it possibly hitting the format was around 6-7 months ago, but not a peep since.

Did you hear of any recent updates/rumors since then? This really needs a new 4K scan from the OCN with an HDR pass. The current Universal blu-ray is a DNR, over-sharpened mess. Same goes for Universal's "DANTE'S PEAK". They both deserve a 4K restoration and UHD release. Both would be day 1 purchases.

Fixed.

Major studio films from the mid 1990s don't need "restoration".

Most studios are like that now. Without anniversaries we'd probably get almost nothing catalog on disc from the majors now.
