Yeah, can't wait to get this one. The packaging seems to be a digipack with individual sleeves

Well, I already had the dvd of Europa in my collection so I already knew I liked that film. I hadn’t seen the other two before. Wasn’t that big on Epidemic, would have been more interesting to me if they stayed in the olden times. Element of Crime was very good though, I like those semi-post apocalyptic films set in Eurasia like this and films like Stalker, Europa, Dead Man’s Letters, Visitor to a Museum etc. Also has some common elements to Blade Runner and The Ugly Swans

There is one odd thing about the Element of Crime though and that is the helicopter or plane shot scene over the delta. There’s some pretty darn bright sky in the distance at the right top of the screen. Perhaps that is on all the prints. Perhaps it couldn’t be filtered as it was just a portion of the screen? Perhaps they let it go in post-production, just sort of stood out against the normal darkness visuals

The Europa DVD listing on criterion now shows the new cover art. Maybe that means the standalone Blus are still coming? The EoC DVD isn't listed anymore, seems oop.

The Kingdom might be the most fun, but I get a real kick out of Idioterne, Dogville, and The House that Jack Built which all have a certain underlying humor and amusing archness that I think you'd dig in a similar way. The House that Jack Built probably has the most pronounced humor and is generally much more fun than you're likely imagining given the subject matter.

I am a huge fan of The Kingdom (a.k.a. Riget) — but I've never been all that big of a fan of his theatrical films. I do like the Europa trilogy, and many of his later films are indeed quite unique and entertaining... but I definitely wouldn't delve into his films hoping they would be similar to it.

I just got this and I'm so glad this finally got a Blu ray release. This is a great set and maybe my favorite release from Criterion, some of the most beautiful films I've ever seen and tons of special features.

Damn… this has been on my list forever and I always push it off to the next sale! Can’t say I would necessarily have bought it during next month’s sale — but maybe!
I believe MUBI has a bunch of LVT rights, possibly including these, so we may see new discs soon enough. Does anyone know if the commentaries are Criterion-owned? |
