As noted, if you want all the extras, then the first DVD release of the original trilogy, the 4 disc set is a must-have, as the 4th disc contains a 2+ hour documentary called Empire of Dreams that is fantastic and a must-see and I'm fairly certain has not been put on any other release.

If you have used DVD shops or thrift stores near you, I see this 4th disc just loose on the shelf all the time, so you could also just look for it by itself.

(as long as we're talking exclusive extras, the VHS blue holo-box has a fourth tape with From Star Wars to Jedi, which is another amazing doc. And the Faces VHS release had interviews with GL and Leonard Maltin that I don't think have come to DVD either.)

I would rather watch a pan and scan VHS dub from the 1980's off of TV of the original versions of the OT than watch the Special Editions on any format.

Nah, the new TPM UHD has a lot more pop in key scenes than the old blu-ray/DVD (the difference is less apparent on capsaholic since the DR of the UHD is reduced there and some of the color too). DNR is not fixed, but the color and pop make it a big upgrade for me all the same.

But yeah we agree the Clones UHD is pretty similar though, basically just a hint more detail due to better encoding and quite far off looking from theatrical 35mm look. But I always thought it had a lot of beautiful scenes myself....

They took old masters (well, can't do much for Clones) and slapped it on a 4K disc.
except they re-did the TPM grading of the old master which makes it look much better and more theatrical (although the DNR is annoying on some sections) even if they still underplay a few colors

and they could have done a lot for clones by going to 35mm theatrical grading, which had a lot more pop, and not DNR'ing (but it seems this may not matter so much soon from what see.... around.... or on the prior page images )

yup, as I said, DNR'ed, but at least not in the way the next two were

The definitive way to watch episodes 1-6 on blu ray is:
For the prequels the 2019 blu rays, which are the same as the 2011 blu rays.
For the originals the 2020 blu rays, which in the US you can only get along with the 4ks.

For MENACE and CLONES you definitely want to make sure the digital noise filter on your tv is turned OFF. I also have it turned OFF for the original trilogy. On SITH I have it turned on AUTO because there is a lot of grain that can become too distracting.

On MENACE, CLONES, SITH, and JEDI I have the sharpness on my OPPO blu ray player turned up to the max. On HOPE and EMPIRE I have it turned up to about 66%.

It is advisable to keep your TV's or blu-ray player's Digital Noise Reduction/Filter "Off" Period for any type of movie, TV show, etc.

It's also recommended to NOT increase any sharpness whatsoever on your player or TV as the movies on blu-ray. 4K UHD, etc are all digital signals. If you increase your sharpness, you are just adding unnecessary sharpening to the picture. 0 is where it needs to be or 10 for those who are LG owners.

Personally, I think the 4K UHD Blu-ray versions of the Star Wars films are the best options out there. They are the best the films have ever looked, even with some DNR added to some of the films. But goodness the clarity and contrast is soooooo much better than the 2011 blu-rays it's not even funny! And the color grading is almost on par with what they looked like when they were released theatrically.

As mentioned previously though, in order to get all of the extras, one would need to buy the 4K UHD releases, the 2011 blu-ray boxed set release, the Prequel DVDs, the Original Trilogy DVDs, and honestly even the VHS Copies. There are just so much Star Wars extra content thrown exclusively on every home media release it's not even funny!

The massive Laserdisc box set was pretty cool back in the day.
