Lmao. This is seemingly stuck in development hell, and then Turbine are like, "BTW, we're releasing it in a couple of weeks." Interesting that they're the ones doing the heavy lifting. I'd got it in my head that Arrow were the ones working closely with Jackson.

The amount of internet hyperbole going on in this thread is ridicoulous

Why just wait and see what is actual on the disc BEFORE *****ing about it?
Its clear like water that this is a proper 4K restoration from the negative and not AI shenanigans.
The scan ist done at universal and the restoration work was LSP. LSP btw. did the very good Dune Restoration.
They are good.

The only problem here is PJ but it doesnt look like hes gone Full blown DNR to the extreme here. Even the promo stills (if they are actually from the disc) doesnt look that way.

So lets just wait and see for once instead of just complaining!

Im pretty impressed what turbine put together here.
If the PQ is stellar this will be one of the releases of the year!

Awesome! Im impressed...

People should stop acting like only arrow/fim can do a good encode.
Its insulting to other companies and just plain stupid internet behaviour.

And I am really happy that it will be included. I think its too bad, that most Open Matted Versions just get lost over time. Even with theatrical original intended Aspect is widescreen, the OMs are nice Bonus Features, I would love to see more often, out of curiousity.

My question is, has Turbine licensed out their remasters? I have no idea. But this comment stuck out, "THE FRIGHTENERS has been exclusively restored by Turbine and is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The original 35mm negative was scanned in 4K resolution at Universal Post, USA. LSP Medien restored the scan in 4K in Germany and graded it in HDR/Dolby Vision in consultation with Peter Jackson. In New Zealand Peter Jackson approved this restoration."

I'll wait for the one disc, standard 4K release because I don't want the memorabilia cards, the poster, the extra discs and all of that junk. It's useless.

Geoff i have nothing against you. But since blues brothers you are salty as fook when it comes to turbine. That is the complete opposite of neutral on your side. Youre clearly biased and that is not a good thing.

Im not defending turbine for christ sake.
I just say: Lets fookin wait and see BEFORE b*i*t*c*h*i*n*g about it.
So tell me what this has to do with defending something?

Is it too much to ask for?
I remember you did the same thing for other releases.

Where did I say I was neutral?! It's really very simple: I don't like turbine. I don't like their practices, from their shady "this is the only limited edition! (until the next one)" business model to their incessant need to remix audio to their highly suspect AI uprezzing of shitty old transfers and passing them off not only as "remastered" HD but as an actual 4K HDR version. You've got a gigantic hard-on for them and think them capable of doing no wrong, you're just as blinkered as me but in the opposite way.

But I said what I said at the ^ top for the main reason: I think open matte is, by and large, an artistically bankrupt way of presenting a film that's only good for screen fillers who hate black bars. Hence why turbine have gone for it, they'll do anything and everything to appeal to that lowest denominator.

Still, at least the caps look good! Thank god they did the restoration in-house and kept Jackson away from it until the end.

Nothing about Turbines limited releases is "shady". Its easy to understand.
Each of the releases omited some additional stuff, and releasing limited Mediabooks with different designs over time is even more regular with other companies. So nothing surprising here. The communication was also as transparent as it could have been on that.

Open matte might even be 1.33:1 with black bars on the sides, depending on how the movie was filmed. And I am happy to have such things preserved.

My personal bet is that the next release of the movie from turbine will omit the physical add on stuff, and just being presented in a Mediabook. Maybe it even omits the Bonus BluRay with the OM version.

I have to admit that the AI upscaled releases might be communicated more open. Would help people make decisions based upon informations, and not opinions.

With turbine it also seems very important which company they hired to do the (pre)mastering:
IIRC, Crash and Princess Bride where done by LSP,
Dragonheart and Daylight where done by Galaxy Studios
Twister by Visual Data Media

regarding the audio: I have no problem with 3D audio, as long as the original theatrical audio also is present, to choose what I want to use. Not as mother companies bringing remixes and throw the original mix away, as it is quite common in many major labels.

Meine Güte the UK thread crap force is annoying as **** indeed. Instead of just being happy that there will most likely be a nice Arrow release thx to Turbine...

And no, Arrow isn't even always best encoding wise. I don't like some of the stuff that Turbine does either, but they also didn't provide a totally shitty Pitch Black BD for ex.

Maybe Arrow pulls another Robocop and such on this: Releases the HD BluRay in a limited set, and after some years, after its sold well, they license the UHD and re-releases the same limited Box, just with different discs, for the new stellar price.

Nothing shady on that at all.

They did, on Cronenberg's CRASH and on John Landis' SCHLOCK.

Well, the actual 4K UHD and the actual film BluRays still come in 2.35:1. So the open matte is what it is, a bonus feature, likely to be omitted from any subsequent "less ultimate" edition.

Actually, for Frighteners, they do say on FB that they don't exclude a subsequent release, but that depends on how well the current one sells. Absolutely understandable, actually. Better than release just the first version and then leave the title to eBay scalpers.

And it's quite interesting how Geoff, not having any other reasons to crap over Turbine this time (whom he still hasn't forgiven for the Blues Brothers box), is now splitting hairs over the inclusion of an open matte version.
