I almost never notice they use computers to smooth things over for older actresses and actors in movies (other than with Jurassic Park and Predator's smoothing of faces from film grain) unless they're de-aged like Michael Douglas in Ant-Man 1, or Indiana Jones 5, yet to be released.
With Sandra Bullock appeared in Bullet Train, I thought she looked young for her age at 58, or had plastic surgery or something. I guess it's possible without any adjustments, but good eyes if able to see she is being digitally altered in that scene. I didn't know, but also didn't care. A replacement these days for heavy make up. Once old age starts taking over, best to just go with it and accept it, or forever be worried about it. It's tough for these actors who want to appear young all the time. |

Milla Jovovich has that weird filter in most of Resident Evil 3: Extinction. I read that she had an allergic reaction but since they were deep into filming all they could do was try to digitally correct it in post.
As far as the filters for Sandra Bullock, she's just had a lot of work done and they use the filter almost as a corrective tool. I did notice the filter on Catherine Zeta Jones in Wednesday but it wasn't used on her face as much, it was used on her neckline and cleavage. There are some shots that would sneak in and her neck is a bit wrinkly now, so they used that filter to smooth it out. She's also definitely had some work done over the years, so those combinations of surgery and digital filters don't always mesh well. Last edited by cheez avenger; 11-27-2022 at 08:10 PM. |

This is true and having spent some time in the industry doing make-up special FX, we did learn how to do this type of make up. The technique was almost like the technique they use for newscasters and anchormen/women. You gotta cake that shit on like you wouldn't believe. Now with digital filters, there's some leeway. You cake it on as much as possible and the filter fills in the rest.

I think the tech has obviously improved since they started trying to do this stuff and with most new movies being shot digitally, it certainly helps them filter the crap out of actors faces, but it is still really distracting.
Watching slightly older movies from the 00's that are shot on film, the smoothing really sticks out as you have lots of film grain visible then big smooth blotches on (usually female) faces, under their eyes, their cheeks etc. I wish i'd started taking pics of this every time i see it so i could post some specific examples. |

Look at Tom Cruise in Maverick compared to him on the red carpet.
On the red carpet I can buy him as a man in mid-50s. The skin, wrinkles, complexion while better than most mid-50 yr olds still shows age and wear and tear. Watch him in Maverick - looks the ultimate movie star - perfectly handsome in nearly every single shot. So obviously something's being done. |

Anyone put in front of a camera, at the very least, will get a layer of something that'll reduce the amount of sheen gleaming off their foreheads because of the added lights in production. Unless, of course, they are intending to show their glistening pores (such as Dwayne Johnson in an action scene).
"Makeup" was also a generic term for everything transformative to their appearance though, such as hair coloring. No, Tom's natural hair color isn't the luscious dark brown anymore that you see in Top Gun: Maverick. |

Do people think this is Ryan Gosling’s natural complexion and that he’s not wearing any makeup here? (Random example since I was just watching this) |

Was this a serious question? I can't tell if you're trolling or extremely naive.
Everyone in front of the camera will have their skin touched up with make up to look as flawless as possible, regardless of gender. Common knowledge. But for fun, here's the man in your profile photo wearing make up to the Golden Globes ![]() https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/fashio...globes-make-up And his thoughts on the men of music group BTS wearing make up Elgort has notably spent time with members of BTS. He's just as mesmerized with their stunning smoky eye looks and bright hair colors as Allure editors are. "I love how fearlessly they are styled," he says. "I love the makeup they wear and their hairstyles — it’s cool and different." He has a theory that people in America are getting so excited about K-pop based on these beauty facets alone. "Their style choices are more exciting and out-there than what we’re seeing here," he adds. https://www.allure.com/story/ansel-e...polo-interview ![]() |

I watched Wednesday on a 140" screen via 4K projector yesterday and it looks like they more or less CG-ed almost everybody's face, especially the jawlines and cheeks. Once you notice it it‘s very distracting. And I’m not only talking about the actresses.
