It's owned by Netflix pretty much everywhere outside Germany, so I'm a bit doubtful.

There’s a world I can imagine the budget crunch Netflix would look into seeing how some titles could be further monetized, but just think its a little odd this title would appear before Don’t Look Up or Glass Onion in terms of titles Criterion probably wouldn’t do.

Yeah, this is not an import. Obivously, MPI made a deal witn Netflix to release it in US.
There is also a listing for a separate Blu-ray edition: https://www.importcds.com/all-quiet-...t/030306226392 |

It's entirely possible that its producers had a separate deal for U.S. physical media before Netflix bought the streaming rights. That's how CODA got a BD & 4K release in Italy; Eagle Pictures (which co-financed it) got the Italian physical media rights before Apple TV+ got the streaming rights. (Same for Japan on BD only.)

Also Netflix co-financed the project, it wasn't an acquisition. While it's supposable to imagine the production company can carve out they retain video rights (like Wes Anderson's deals for all his films), it seems extremely strange to me that this would be the first Netflix title to come out this way and that other films and filmmakers like, as I said, Glass Onion wouldn't have contractually asked for the same if it's an option.
Ultimately it's a good thing as I do think Netflix will have to come around to monetizing its library eventually but just think this seems like a strange situation. |
