My friend linked me this, talking about the color change.

https://cineuropa.org/interview/439293/

"Fabrice du Welz: Before Covid, Calvaire was re-released as an "Ardennes trilogy" with Alleluia [+] and Adoration [+] in a few arthouse theatres in Japan. This is what allowed me to rework the colour grading to erase the overly strong yellows and greens as was done at the time under the influence of the films of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It is this new, more "primary" master that was used for the DVD/Bluray re-release in France by StudioCanal and the US theatrical copies distributed by Yellow Veil Pictures, which had been seeking to recover the rights to the film for some time. In addition to its theatrical presence, Calvaire will be available a few days later on digital and from retailers as a nice Blu-ray object is planned for those who like to collect this kind of thing, like me. At the time of its first screening in the US in 2006, Calvaire was very poorly received by the press and quickly buried, so I'm very happy with this re-release."

I wished he would have kept the colors to his initial influence...oh wells

strong yellows, greens, birds, rabbits, flying pigs... no matter how you spin the tone of this film, it's still aggressive and insanely amazing. Personally, I'm not fuming over a bit of color grading changes. I'm thrilled for this new release and one I can't wait to revisit!

the irony of reducing the yellows for the Yellow Veil release!

So is this film considered part of the wave of Extreme horror French cinema from the late 90's to early 2000's or is it more of an arthouse-y psychological thriller? Depending on the answer I might move the film up the viewing queue and watch it sooner.

Watched this last night. Can someone explain what was up with the
[Show spoiler]kids in the woods? It seemed like there were no women in the village, so where did all the kids come from?

is a theory

Although it has some disturbing bits, the dread factor is primarily from the sense of oppressive strangeness the victim finds himself in. It's not some kind of gore-fest...at least not that I recall.

A bit like Texas Chainsaw Massacre in that regard, and on my recent rewatch I was reminded how the director makes a direct reference, what I belive to be an explicit homage to one of TCM's standout climactic scenes
[Show spoiler]when the lead final girl (final man in this case) is being tormented and menaced
.

Not really either IMHO. Not a horror movie at all more of imagine prison with no women only a village setting with muck and farm animals. What men resort to without women and you got it. I never found this very good at all and don't get the praise many throw at it.

IF you want to see a man
[Show spoiler] ****ing a cow or pig I don't remember
then this if for you. Utter waste of time IMHO.

Hadn't checked because it wasn't on sale for the Halfway to Black Friday, but glad I took a look randomly just now...was down to only 8 slipcovers left! Order placed.
