What do you guys think of Scream Factory releasing this? Does anyone know how difficult it would be for them to get the Region 1 rights?

I watched Fortress (1985) for the first time back in January. I really enjoyed it and would love for it to get a new home media release.

Just confirmed: NFSA in Canberra have the OCN for ‘Fortress (1985)’ and a request can made to access it for a new scan for a 4K UHD restoration release.

WIN Corporation own the rights, either Umbrella or Crawford’s can release it, preferably Umbrella since they understand the science of a 4K UHD transfer.

Has any label worked with WIN Corporation Pty Ltd? If they couldn't work with the Crawfords, I assume WIN Network are similar in operations and tactics.

I have no idea but most important thing is: the OCN exists and has been preserved.

Now these labels/companies need to figure out some sort of business plan to get things going.

Yes but there is communication between both parties and Crawfords do help to market their most iconic productions, so yeah, it’s not symbiosis but some sort of co-operation between both parties, look at their website.

Imprint/ViaVision is another company that should be notified that the OCN is being stored in Canberra and that it is available for a 4K scan for a 4K UHD release.

Only thing is if WIN Corperation/Crawford Productions are willing to play ball with them. And judging by their aesthetics, appear unlikely too.

Someone who did work for Shout said this title is indeed controlled by Warner in the US, but was not on their radar because the HBO catalog was off limits (until very recently when Warner sorted through it for The Hitcher). Warner does not have any film elements or masters and while they could get access to materials held at the NFSA or through Win/Crawford (a similar situation was done for Razorback, where Shout used Umbrella's masters), those main rights holders probably won't play ball and WB wouldn't go to this length over a small obscure title.

Why wouldn’t they play ball?

While WIN corp occasionally works with the likes of Madman and former Dendy, Crawford has a self release outlet (for dvds only it seems) and probably prefers working alone since nobody has licenced any title of theirs.

Crawfords is 100% sold to WIN, all they do with their website is market their productions.

No label has directly reached out to WIN to license this release. There has been a lot of speculation/heresay etc, but no one from Umbrella or Imprint has directly reached out to WIN and said “Can we license Fortress from you for a physical BluRay release, the OCN is available in Canberra”. I’m not exactly sure why all this baseless conjecture exits about this title. It’s like someone at the labels is hand-balling the process instead of calling WIN and making deal.

It seems like the confusion stems from the ‘Crawfords Prodcutions’ logo being on the WIN releases. From what I understand, it’s no different to something like the ‘Lifeforce (1985)’ 4K UHD from Scream Factory having the Cannon Logo on it. Even though Cannon is 100% sold, their movies still have the company’s logo on the packaging. It might be some sort of legal stipulation to include this.

I'm willing to bet you don't actually know this.

Obviously no 100% proof, but based on some email replies, it doesn’t seem to have happened.

People still seem to think Crawfords and WIN are operating as seperate independent companies, when in reality, Crawfords is 100% sold to WIN.

Last I heard, Umbrella were actively trying.

Didn't they just post an image of it on their instagram story the other day?

Do you have any other news for Fortress 1985?. It seems like a good time, 2025, for a Bluray release for its 40th anniversary?.

This movie might be a remake of Fortress if it ever sees the light of day (The Fortunate). https://en.kinorium.com/1551421/
