I ordered in APRIL on Amazon and got an email today asking me to approve a delay without any estimated arrival date. Amazon fulfillment is a frustrating mystery - from my experience, orders that are placed later are often fulfilled before orders placed earlier. If I had placed an order last week instead of two and a half months ago, I’d probably have this title in hand or on its way.

Yeah, I ordered mine June 3rd. Sorry.
I think a number of additional factors come into play such as Prime vs not-Prime and your primary warehouse. So if an item is available at warehouse close to me but is not in the one's the primarily server your area, it may be that the priority goes to local shipments before they have to transport an item across the country, especially if your warehouse is earmarked for a shipment from the manufacturer that just hasn't come in yet and from what I've heard Kino has been short on getting titles to Amazon lately. I usually just order straight from Kino, but this time it was cheaper on Amazon. Although I do have another Kino order that should be out that hasn't shipped because they're now showing out of stock. So they could be having overall issues getting their discs in to then distribute them. |

This was a blind buy for me (I had previously seen The Assassin and Flowers of Shanghai) and I thought it was a worthy purchase. It kind of felt like a Taiwanese Michelangelo Antonioni film. It doesn't have much plot, but it does have great cinematography, a beautiful female lead, and a strong sense of ennui. Love the opening shot set to the techno beat.

As a big fan of Hsiao-Hsien Hou, this was a blind buy for me - and I was not disappointed. This might be the best restoration of an Asian film I've seen so far this year. The Blu-ray is extremely cinematic, with the world-class cinematography and period-typical palette perfectly preserved. Most importantly, the encoding is perfect despite the heavy neon tones, which is anything but a given.

Should Svet just stick to new releases from now on? It's obvious that he hates any new restoration of a film regardless of how it actually looks simply for being different from how it "originally" looked (on a DVD, 20 years ago, which he hasn't watched in ages). Maybe if he reviews Madame Web or whatever he'll have something constructive to say for once.

From the screenshots I have seen, this film looks amazing. There's no way this video should get a 2.5 just because of colors alone. That's putting other films with other video/encoding problems more credit. It does seem like the reviewer's scoring on the video depends mostly on the way the colors look and compare to previous releases but I think the problem with comparing to an older DVD release is that there was probably some kind of practice where companies would manipulate the colors of the film for its DVD counterpart.
The reviewer seems to be comparing it to the French TF1 Video DVD. If I had to imagine what this film would actually look like in the 35mm prints that was utilized for its theatrical release, I would actually argue that the new 4K restoration looks more accurate than the older DVDs. I know that L'Immagine Ritrovata gets a lot of heat for their color grading and this reviewer in particular has given some rather intense scores for the films restored by this company but I actually think this one is well justified. Also the thing about the film now looking ordinary because of the 4K restoration but so much of this film has some amazingly beautiful cinematography with strong use of colors since there are so many scenes set in the rave culture. I just simply don't understand what the review is trying to argue about with colors because I think this is the strongest presentation that this film has ever gotten so far and that 2.5 score cannot, for the love of god, be justified based on color alone. |

Svet is a menace can you imagine working on these releases and putting out an exemplary product and having this clown crap all over it for no reason?! Using a DVD as a reference is absolutely hilarious and he does it every time.

Was able to see a very good 35mm print of this a few years ago at an LA rep theater and have to say that the screenshots posted in the review are very accurate to my lingering impression from that screening. I always avoided seeing this movie in college because of how ancient the DVD release was, even though I know that's the way almost every English speaking person first saw it. Thankfully that wasn't the case for me, as I got to see it in pristine, original fashion without any visual compromise.
As is almost always the case, The Doctor is scary with how wrong his convictions are, in terms of both aesthetics and psychology. "Therefore, you must" |
