New app is up now: downloaded to my phone for now. All the Discovery content I watch is on it. So I’m cancelling Discovery+ which means that $7/month can now go to the eventual highest tier plan in six months or so.

I just did…

For some reason I have to set the AppleTV to always output 4K Dolby Vision and leave Range Matching to On so I get Dolby Vision from the 4K DV titles.

Atmos worked fine, and the UI is less cluttered than HBO Max.

I did.

It’s fast and clean but sadly, like Peacock, to get the 4K content, you have to switch Video and Audio Settings to have Dolby running at all times since the Max app does not use Apple’s player.

I hope they change that. It would suck to go back and forth in the Settings on the Apple TV just for this app and Peacock.

If you switch the video settings to 4K Dolby Vision/4K HDR, you won’t see it pop up because it’s on all the time. I watched a few minutes of Sex and the City between having Dolby on all the time and not and you can absolutely tell when it’s playing in 4K Dolby and when it’s playing in HD.

Max has launched on iOS, as we all already know.

New app, unlike everywhere else, which will just automatically switch over. Nothing on Android or Roku yet.

My observations:
  • No more custom avatars in app
  • Cable subscribers get the ad-free plan, not ultimate (4K) - Ehh, Zaslav is a cheap bastard, but I'll take it because it's better than having ads.
(Note: I have no idea if this varies depending on the cable company. I doubt it, but you never know.)
  • You can see which devices are signed in and can sign everything out (I don't remember this being a feature before, but I could be wrong). Edit: See steve_dave's post above and below for details on the free 4K for six months promo.

I have not looked at content or tried to play anything, so someone else will have to chime in about that.

See the previous page: as a courtesy, for at least six months from May 23, all legacy subscribers on the $14.99 plan or via cable/satellite/IPTV subscriptions get access to the 4K/Atmos tier.

To get Dolby Vision on AppleTV (for now), set the AppleTV to output 4K Dolby Vision or choose enable Dolby Vision. Then go to Match Content and set Range & Frame Rate to On.

Quoting myself again, HERE IS HOW TO TURN ON DOLBY VISION FOR MAX AND PEACOCK

Turning on Match Content will switch any stream outside of Max and Peacock to the appropriate display settings. IE: 1080p or lower will be HD/SD without HDR/DV enabled, 1080p/4K HDR will display as HDR10, and (if supported) 1080p/4K HDR10+ will output at the proper HDR10+.

Now, while watching content on Max and Peacock, you will have a Dolby Vision layer for everything. Movies and shows with Dolby Vision tag will appear with the proper color while the non DV streams may look a bit darker. Don’t want that? Then as jumpman says, you got to change your Video settings everytime.

They said at least six months, they could extend the courtesy after that or they could not. Just enjoy the free upgrade until the app asks you to upgrade.

Also: Harley Quinn: The Animated Series is finally in 4K Dolby Vision! All the episodes plus the 2023 Valentine’s Day Special.

I’m liking it, the interface is better compared to its old app. Pretty cool the CNN originals and Discovery content is all under one roof now, instead of paying for Discovery+ separately. I don’t care to pay more for the 4K tier, I’m satisfied with the standard ad free plan.

i'm confused how come hdr don't come up when watch something 4k apple tv i know in old hbo max like if i watch wonder woman 84 hdr comes up what's the matter is it because i got ad free subscription or are they still working it i did notice like when you go to continue watching in old hbo max after click on a movie or show it will show edit x button to clear it seems that's not in max app yet

i did figure out had to press apple remote left side near the top in order to make it go away because i couldn't figure out how to delete a tv show continue watch but its now gone

Because the new Max app uses it’s own player interface instead of Apple’s, you have to go into the Video and Audio settings on the Apple TV and switch to 4K Dolby Vision to be ON at all times.

Pretty lame to have had 4K already in the $16 tier then take it away in the new service and be like you can have it again, but for more money! They should have created an option in between the current two HBO Max options instead of just taking it away from the current highest price and adding an even higher price.

Though the 4K list doesn't specifically say if they're going to be HDR or just be in 4k res (also noticed it only mentions one of the Euphoria specials). I wonder if Max's HDR/4K will be better than HBO Max, when I used it a few months ago, it was terribly out of sync on Roku and I had to use the TV app with terrible volume.
