Did Sony ever have the other original Muppet movies in their possession? I thought it was universal that had control of one of them (The Great Muppet Caper).

Sony had home video for TMM and TGMC in the late 1990s and early 2000s, until Disney got them in the overall acquisition in 2004. |

New Frank Oz commentary alone makes this a must-have. He's got such an engaging blend of passion for storytelling and tech talk that I could listen to him all day.
His Little Shop of Horrors track is one of my favorites of all time. "And there's my credit, right on Rick's ass." |

Ah. I never knew Sony had home video rights to the other movies. But then, I was out of my Muppet phase by that time anyway so I wouldn't have known. All my friends in high school were huge Muppet fans. I just moved on to more adult things. Or what I deemed was adult. I didn't get that the Muppets were really for adults to begin with. Though I did see the Muppets Christmas Carol in theaters.

While they’re at it, they should rerelease the soundtrack on digital or disc. The few songs they put on the Muppet Show 25th Anniversary album were kind of weak. Anything I’ve been able to find online has been really bad quality.

Terrific news! It's Sony, I expect this will look great.
And the original THE MUPPET MOVIE (1979) is in my top-ten most wanted, your move Disney! |

This gives me hope that they'll get to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs alongside a few of Sony Pictures Animation's other pre-Into the Spider-Verse films (namely, Surf's Up and the first two Hotel Transylvania movies), seeing as it was part of the 2019 survey.

Dear studio home video departments,
Do you see how easy it is to please movie collectors? New high-quality transfers with original audio and poster art. Bravo Sony! Day one! |

The thing I hate most about Disney's handling of the Muppets is that the company does everything they can to keep the performers and their artistry out of the spotlight -- both to devalue their work and make them more easily replaceable, and out of a misguided idea that knowing who the puppeteers are breaks the "magic" of the characters.
All of that is antithetical to the original spirit of Jim Henson & Co. For a lot of us, the characters were always vessels for that particular troupe of performers, and seeing how they brought the puppets to life was the magic. I came to love puppetry and special effects as a kid largely because enjoying The Muppet Show got me to start reading behind-the-scenes books and watching old documentaries and appreciating Jim, Frank, Jerry, Dave, Richard, Steve, Fran, etc. All of this is to say, 90 fresh minutes of Frank Oz discussing his time with the Muppets (particularly on this, his first solo directing credit) is the kind of rare treat we're not going to get from any Disney release these days. |
