It's embarassing to think I could have just waited for a brazilian release to snatch these 4k restorations up... in a parallel universe where the blu-ray market here wasn't dead.

Surprised they didn't get James Rolfe to do a feature for this release, he's a fan of the series.

A fan, yes, but an expert? I don't know. He made a 4-minute introduction to the series in 2009 and had a 12-minute discussion with his colleague/friend in 2019. In both cases, I admire his fanboy enthusiasm, but I don't find him particularly knowledgeable enough to deliver an in-depth analysis or provide historical/cultural context or behind-the-scenes information about the series.

Could dig up plenty of memes on that fellow. Can't imagine he'll have a lot to contribute unless he pays someone to write it for him. Too busy with his vanity project band anyway.

Tempting, but trying to hold out for a $70 price during half off sales.

I typically do, but something about this one made me not want to tempt fate.

On the one hand, this set is genuinely amazing, but all those 4k masters but no 4k option is a bit disappointing since most 4k remasters eventually get a 4k release down the line. Really doubting if I should get onto this set already or just wait...

No big chance it will get a 4K release.

I am definitely going to order.

Yes, there are new 4K masters, and yes, it is possible that there will be a 4K release some day down the road, if this set sells well enough.

Personally, I think that chances - for now - are rather slim, though. Look at which titles Arrow upgrades to UHD and look at which titles Vinegar Syndrome (who are probably the ones taking the largest chances on releasing obscure titles on UHD) choose.

Most of the stuff that DO get a 4K release tends to be either English-language, or have a substantial built in market through an already established status, like the Italian gialli, zombie and cannibal films and all the Argentos. There seem to be very few 4K UHD releases of classic Spanish, Middle or South American horror.

So, while Arrow may choose to upgrade the set one day, if it sells really well, or if the production costs of 4K releases come down enough to make it more feasible, it is a bit of a gamble.

From what I gather this set has not had any way near the attention that say, the Argento releases or the Bruce Lee box got, and I very much doubt it will sell out in the near future. Given its SRP, I think it will probably pop up in various sales over the next year, like most of Arrow's more obscure exploitation boxes have done previously. And do we really think there will eventually be 4K upgrades of the William Grefe, Bill Rebane or Sam Katzman boxes? I mean, anything is possible , but ....

4K has become a standard for archiving film in a digital format. When you scan a film element at 4K, for all intents and purposes you get an exact digital copy of it. 4K also makes it easier to apply digital restoration filters seamlessly. If it looks OK at 4K it will be flawless at 1080p.

Just because a film is scanned at 4K, it doesn't mean there would be any benefit in releasing it that way. The Coffin Joe films were cheaply produced. They aren't like Lawrence of Arabia or 2001.

There's so many different types of elements being used for the movies in this set too. I definitely wouldn't expect a 4k upgrade for the entire set.

I'd say it's A/B compatible in this case because they release this set on both sides of the Atlantic. That's their usual practice, although there were a few exceptions.

20% off at Target, with tax it's around $77. Almost as good as 50% off.

(I'm still going to wait for the standard, I need to save the money for BF and I don't need the booklet that bad).

Yeah, I had pre-ordered this from Amazon and received an email from them today informing me of the change in release date. Pretty bummed, as I was hoping to get it in time for Christmas. Oh, well.

BTW, as I write this, the Amazon price is now $78, for those interested. Probably not gonna drop much lower than that.

I placed a pre-order at the end of October. Great deal. I had $34 in rewards points so the price ended up being $51.00 after tax.
