i will be using the ps3 as a gaming system and blu ray player mainly...im not even sure of other capabilities on the 80

i dont need SACD playback at all, could live w/o backwards capability, have no idea what the memory slots for SD/memorystick/compact flash are

my main concern is will i need the extra 40gb in time? (and i really dont want to upgrade the hard drive later)

any help?
theyre for looking at pictures, i did it once when i got it its fun for 10 min then you never use it again.

I'd wait till the models that replace the 80gb and 40gb (supposedly coming soon). The newer model is suppose to be 120gb/160gb hard drive w/ 65nm cpu and graphics card. That should put out considerable less heat than the current 40 or 80gb. If your planning on putting it in a cabinet enclosed I'd go that route for the 80gb puts out a considerable amount of heat. There is rumors of a price drop also...if ps2 backwards compatibility isn't an issue...then go with the 40gb now or hold off till they announce the newer sku's.

i think i might go with the 40gb because i dont think i will see a better price than this, especially if higher gig models will be coming out

is the 40 discontinued? or just the 80?

I think that it was the 60gb that was discontinued (which was backwards compatible with more ps2 games). I'd do the 80gb (especially because I'd rather have the game than the really bad Spiderman 3) except that the Blu-Ray won't work with my universal remote (which is IR/RF but not bluetooth). I guess I'm waiting to see the pricing on/compatibility of the BD-50.

Yep I played ps 1 & 2 games on my 40gig PS3, didnt have any problem loading ps1 and ps2 games on it. Ive tried ps1 with my friend's games and it still worked fine.

Only disapointment i have with 40gig ps3 was C.C as for other models as well.

Not necessarily cheaper. If you get a sony credit card from sonystyle.com and purchase an 80gb with the card you 100 dollars off your first purchase (of over 299 dollars). Which makes the 80gb the same price as the 40 gb.

*also get 1 year no interest

Is there any quality differences from a stand alone player in picture? Also if I have the Onkyo 605 and a PS3 can I decode DTS-HD MA?

I just bought a PS3 last night and got Spiderman 3 and Troy Directors cut with it. I'm blown away by the quality of Blu-Ray, its fabulous.

I am super happy I went the ps3 route, was easy to set up and has way more functionality than a standalone. I'm sold. Now I just need a boatload of cash to buy a ton of BD movies.

C'mon, you have a 60 gig model and you know it! (now)

The 40 gig model is not being discontinued so far. Supposedly the 80 gig model will be retired to make way for a bigger hard drive and 65 nm Cell processor, which will consume less energy, run cooler, and most importantly cost less for Sony to produce. The PS3 doesn't have an overheating problem though, so you shouldn't be concerned with that part. I don't think the cost savings Sony incurs will be passed to the consumer either given the recent price reductions.

If you're primarily looking for Blu-ray playback, and you don't care about PS2 backward compatibility or SACD playback, buy the 40 gig model. If you need more hard drive space later, you can always swap it yourself. You may not think you'll need the hard drive space, but the PS3 is an awesome media server. Personally, I have a fairly decent SACD library, so I'd never buy the 40 gig model.

The PS3 is the best all around Blu-ray player, and its picture quality is exceptional. The only thing it doesn't currently do is decode or pass through DTS-HD Master Audio, but reportedly decoding will be introduced in a later firmware upgrade.

The PS3 is the quickest BD player to spool up, and it's the most upgradeable so far. Having the Cell processor built in allows it a lot more versatility than any other player. Enable the media streaming capabilities, and you also open up a whole new world with HD downloads, music, and picture streaming. The Playstation Network will soon introduce full HD downloads of movies, TV, and videos for PS3 use. Right now, HD previews of movies, Blu-ray discs, and upcoming PS3 games are available for download and viewing in 1080p.

We're building a new house and I fully intend to put a 40gb in the living room and put the 80gb in the tech closet for the media room. Thank god for Bluetooth!
Be sure you have a good cooling fan for the tech closet!

None of them come with HDMI cables, but you can buy them on Monoprice for < $10 (at most).

If you have no PS2 games, you really don't have a need for the 80 gig version unless you plan on moving videos from your computer to your PS3 hard-drive to play them on your TV.

i dont have that need at all, ive gone with the 40...

btw, i know this has been asked a million times but does it matter what hdmi cable you buy or how expensive it is?

i have 2 monster hdmi's (bought when i first bought my HDTV and the salesperson tricked me into it with me not knowing any better at the time)

i think i will buy a cheaper one for my upconvert dvd player and switch the monster to my ps3

is this one any good?

I thought the 40gb had the 65nm cell, is this not the case?
