I'd wait till the models that replace the 80gb and 40gb (supposedly coming soon). The newer model is suppose to be 120gb/160gb hard drive w/ 65nm cpu and graphics card. That should put out considerable less heat than the current 40 or 80gb. If your planning on putting it in a cabinet enclosed I'd go that route for the 80gb puts out a considerable amount of heat. There is rumors of a price drop also...if ps2 backwards compatibility isn't an issue...then go with the 40gb now or hold off till they announce the newer sku's.

I think that it was the 60gb that was discontinued (which was backwards compatible with more ps2 games). I'd do the 80gb (especially because I'd rather have the game than the really bad Spiderman 3) except that the Blu-Ray won't work with my universal remote (which is IR/RF but not bluetooth). I guess I'm waiting to see the pricing on/compatibility of the BD-50.

Yep I played ps 1 & 2 games on my 40gig PS3, didnt have any problem loading ps1 and ps2 games on it. Ive tried ps1 with my friend's games and it still worked fine.
Only disapointment i have with 40gig ps3 was C.C as for other models as well. |

Is there any quality differences from a stand alone player in picture? Also if I have the Onkyo 605 and a PS3 can I decode DTS-HD MA?

I just bought a PS3 last night and got Spiderman 3 and Troy Directors cut with it. I'm blown away by the quality of Blu-Ray, its fabulous.
I am super happy I went the ps3 route, was easy to set up and has way more functionality than a standalone. I'm sold. Now I just need a boatload of cash to buy a ton of BD movies. |

![]() The 40 gig model is not being discontinued so far. Supposedly the 80 gig model will be retired to make way for a bigger hard drive and 65 nm Cell processor, which will consume less energy, run cooler, and most importantly cost less for Sony to produce. The PS3 doesn't have an overheating problem though, so you shouldn't be concerned with that part. I don't think the cost savings Sony incurs will be passed to the consumer either given the recent price reductions. If you're primarily looking for Blu-ray playback, and you don't care about PS2 backward compatibility or SACD playback, buy the 40 gig model. If you need more hard drive space later, you can always swap it yourself. You may not think you'll need the hard drive space, but the PS3 is an awesome media server. Personally, I have a fairly decent SACD library, so I'd never buy the 40 gig model. |

The PS3 is the best all around Blu-ray player, and its picture quality is exceptional. The only thing it doesn't currently do is decode or pass through DTS-HD Master Audio, but reportedly decoding will be introduced in a later firmware upgrade.
The PS3 is the quickest BD player to spool up, and it's the most upgradeable so far. Having the Cell processor built in allows it a lot more versatility than any other player. Enable the media streaming capabilities, and you also open up a whole new world with HD downloads, music, and picture streaming. The Playstation Network will soon introduce full HD downloads of movies, TV, and videos for PS3 use. Right now, HD previews of movies, Blu-ray discs, and upcoming PS3 games are available for download and viewing in 1080p. |

None of them come with HDMI cables, but you can buy them on Monoprice for < $10 (at most).
If you have no PS2 games, you really don't have a need for the 80 gig version unless you plan on moving videos from your computer to your PS3 hard-drive to play them on your TV. |
