The n word wasn't scripted. It was an ad lib borne out of singing an already outdated version of a nursery rhyme.

Cut it every single time. People can complain till their face is blue about censorship but I'm happier watching recreations of lost Doctor Who episodes without the n word.

Better not get the upcoming Kind Hearts and Coronets UHD either, then, or you'll be in for a shock.

Easy enough to include multiple audio tracks in this day and age so people can choose to watch the censored version or a version with the original audio track. Ridiculous decision to only include a censored version. I don't care what was in the script or what was ad libbed, I'd just prefer to hear the original audio as originally transmitted, thanks.

These episodes aren't originally transmitted. They are a new production made in 2023/24.

Yeah of course. I said I would prefer to hear the original audio as originally transmitted (to accompany whatever visuals they come up with).

Obviously with these recreations in general and this one in particular, something that's seen as important about them is using the original audio, otherwise why not do fresh recordings of the lines or chop and change this or that bit of the audio / script.

I mean, were talking about a super casual racial slur in a new production that's part of a family series. I can see the historical value of including it in the photo reconstruction (particularly as the historical context would be more obvious, and it would appeal less to children), but it's a perfectly understandable edit.

In fairness, only one animation has fully unedited audio (The Ice Warriors) IIRC. Many cut whole scenes. From the looks of things, The Celestial Toymaker will be fundamentally different in much the same way that The Underwater Menace was.

I wouldn't argue the case either way if the original episode existed, I'd back whatever decision taken as I am sure it would be a difficult one. I think any new production would edit it out. It isn't integral and was never even intentional from a creative point of view. I am fully behind Mark Ayres in this situation, and also fully back RTD's recent combative attitude to this sort of thing (even if his Who isn't really my thing).

Of course it's going to be edited out of a kid's program in 2024

I’m not. This is Britain not America. No legally protected free speech here. People get arrested here for mean words on Twitter. Autistic kids get arrested for saying a policewoman looks like their lesbian grandmother.

Why of course? It’s not edited out of all kids’ books. It’s still in Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, for example.

And how many kids will be buying The Celestial Toymaker? Adults buy these releases.

NB. Supporting free speech and being anti-censorship doesn't mean you endorse everything in those texts. I’d be against banning The Communist Manifesto, for example, or any Soviet era propaganda films despite my not liking communism.

It’s not as if the slur was audible on the soundtrack release either. It’s old news.

Yeah, IIRC they purposefully added narration over it.

There was a BFI screening today. Lots of praise being heaped on it. Sounds like it isn't one for the purists, but sounds like they've massively improved the 3D animation process that was previously used on Web of Fear.

Only two of the Post-Power of the Daleks animations have had scenes completely cut. PotD SE from 2020 cut a small 20 second shot of Two dancing while playing the recorder, as the team felt that they couldn’t re-animate the shot to a satisfactory degree with the time and budget allowed for the selective reanimating of portions of the story. The Macra Terror cut out the “Rough and Tumble Machine” section due to budgetary constraints. The 3-ish minute scene does hint at the larger plot but mostly serves to give Ben and Polly new outfits. To save £££ the animation has them start the story in their outfits after the scene and with Polly having her haircut already. The scenes are included in their Reconstructions.

An audio-only edit for all regions and all versions of Evil of the Daleks is replacing some background Beatles music with a different 60s pop song. This has been edited since the first CD releass back in the 2000s, because Beatles licensing is stupidly expensive and since its just background music in a café its not VITAL to the storytelling like it was in The Chase (which, the edit for the US and AU BD is much more elegant than the one made for the DVD and which airs on iPlayer now (again, Beatles licensing is UNGODLY EXPENSIVE)).

Probably the 10th of June then in the UK, seeing as we do Mondays and not Tuesdays

Looks like HMV have revealed a release date of 10 June, along with cover art for both the standard BD and the steelbook. The BD version is the same as what leaked a couple months ago, but the steelbook cover is new and I like it! I think the bold colors work for the vibe of the story, plus the looming figure of the Toymaker seems to be an obvious nod to what we saw in The Giggle last November. Excited to finally see this animation!

To be fair it wasn't in the original script although there was no harm in providing the alternate uncensored audio as a track.

I hope more than that trailer showed.
