I know I said in the Picard movie thread that Stewart should stop but damn how cool would it be to have Picard, Sisko, and Janeway team up.

Would be nice if they just acknowledge what is going on with The Sisko.

That would easily be a blockbuster. I feel like paramount is so disconnceted from the fans in terms of giving the old timeline more stories. Sure I like the Kelvin movies/shows but they don’t hold a candle to the og franchise. Nostalgia alone would get butts in the theater seats.

I agree that I would prefer they went decades into the future as opposed to the past, but a Star Trek film with a new cast of characters is exciting nonetheless.

I'll be honest. Would rather see a fourth film instead of going further back yet again. If JJ is indeed rumored to come back, then....

A 4th Abrams film would be great. If not, I wouldn't mind a movie during TOS timeline but with another starship and crew. Bob Wesley, Matt Decker, Ron Tracey, or one of the other ship captains.

A new Trek film is long overdue! I'll definitely be there.

4th Kelvin film or not, I'm just glad we're getting a new movie period.

Fascinating.

I wonder if they’re going back to the Romulan War story they had right after Enterprise was cancelled twenty years ago.

JJ’s first Trek movie was itself going back to a story idea that was twenty years old at the time, the abandoned Starfleet Academy prequel film pitched shortly after Final Frontier’s release.

Interesting that there's been all these rumors about Paramount being in trouble and possibly being bought by WB. Then Tom Cruise goes over to WB...

But in the span of 24 hours we've got a Star Trek movie and Top Gun 3 announcement.

I'm interested in seeing Star Trek back on the big screen in any capacity but I do admit I'd prefer to have seen the crew back for a 4th Kelvin-verse film.

It’s notable that Paramount — then spending hundreds of millions on two Mission: Impossible installments — was never looped in on the discussion. Cruise doesn’t have any kind of formal deal at the studio but he’s had a long relationship there through multiple executive regimes. Five of his last seven movies were for Paramount, but some of the bloom seems to be off that rose.

Sources say Cruise was not happy with the way Paramount dealt with him on a number of issues. He had lawyered up in 2021, when the studio announced that Top Gun: Maverick would have a mere 45-day theatrical run (which of course did not happen). The studio also pressed Cruise to approve the making of a television show based on Mission: Impossible or Days of Thunder for its streamer.
Quote:
“Tensions have gotten higher between Tom and Paramount as relates to budget and collaboration,” says a source with knowledge of the situation. “He doesn’t send script pages, doesn’t let them see dailies. He used to be very responsible on budgets. That changed on Dead Reckoning.”

I'd rather see a sequel starring the current cast (Pine, Saldana, Quinto etc.) but I'll take what I can get. Exploration-based sci-fi is wonderful and we don't get enough of those.

Another interesting piece of information I found out in the wake of this announcement is that Erik Jendresen, the writer of the cancelled Romulan War script from 2005 that I mentioned earlier, also co-wrote Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning.

Now I’d be even less surprised if that’s what this turns out as. “Decades before JJ’s film,” first of all, could simply be a description for the non-Trekkies who don’t even remember the alternate timeline business. If we’re really getting technical, the opening scene of the movie is where the timelines diverge. Yeah, sure, that’s still 25 years before the main events of that film, but the late 2150’s of the Romulan Wars is still “decades” before 2233 when JJ’s film opens.

Like I said, the basic premise of the ‘09 movie (aside from the alternate timeline elements) itself reused a movie idea that was almost 20 years old at the time. Maybe Paramount is going back to the well again for this one.

I can’t help but remember that a Superman Reboot, a Batman vs Superman film, and a Justice League movie were all kicking around WB in various stages of development in the 90’s/00’s only for all three to eventually happen in the 2010’s.

This would also be the first movie not to feature the Enterprise. It wasn't built until after Kelvin was destroyed. I'm definitely excited and curious what this is.

Good thought, which kind of proves that there is a different past time line, because that erases Star Trek Enterprise.

New ‘Star Trek’ Movie in the Works at Paramount from ‘Andor’ Director
The film will take place decades before J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature.
I would really like to see Star Trek look to the future. Be forward looking. I know nostalgia sells. Also, I feel like having a TV show cast as a foundation for later films works really well for this franchise. However, after Picard Season 3 and Voyager and DS9 wrapping up their respective stories...

I don't know. Anyway, any new Star Trek film is cause for celebration. Bring it on!
