Somewhere between 9 and 10. Whenever I recommended it to folks, they usually replied angrily after watching it, if they made it all the way through. "The most depressing movie I have ever seen. Thanks a-hole" is a typical response!

I'd say 10; that's what makes it so great! The previous post reminded me that I dragged my high school buddies to see this at the local art house and I don't think they ever forgave me, haha

Hope this has a new remaster. Also, while SF has access to the Paramount catalog for 4K releases, American Gigolo could really use a new transfer.

I am curious if this will get a remaster or not. Any thoughts on the current scan? I'm sure it's not the greatest, but just wondering how it looks overall.

Yeah, wasn't terribly fond of the art, but I'm definitely getting this anyway.
One of Schrader's very best films.

As a director, I think my favorites of his are, "Mishima", "Affliction", and "Blue Collar". But I like most of his films.

SF just added it to their site. No extras are listed, but it does say it'll be from a new 2K scan from original film elements.

Weird, the spine art on their website has a 4K UHD logo at the top. I wonder if they'd originally planned to do a 4K but then chose to do a 2K scan instead.

Good catch. Hard to say, as SF often have incorrect info on preliminary covers (usually the wrong number of discs).

The cover at Amazon shows it corrected

edit: The spine also says 158, while the Amazon one says 159. Rolling Thunder 4K is also listed as 159 right now, so perhaps that's where the 4K confusion came from.

Really unpleasant, but good. I'd say a 9 or 10 in bleakness.

Thanks for that link could have listened to them talking for hours about the experience of making the movie - three quality actors in the room at the one time you could just sense the respect they all had for each other.

This is an excellent film - one of Schrader's best, imo.

Would've been nice if Schrader could've recorded a commentary, but I suppose with making so many films recently he didn't have the time....
