My wife is so excited about this. Moana is her favourite movie. She saw an ad for it and was yelling that it's in 3D.

The native 3D presentation of Moana 2 is natural and very comfortable, as usual for Disney animation... basically flawless but it could have been stronger. There are a few stand-out moments, but it doesn't draw much attention to itself. The animation as a whole is dazzling, however the story and songs didn't grab me all that much.

Like Wish last year, the Stereoscopic Supervisor and Stereo Production Supervisor credits pop out. I love those details! Well done, kudos to Katie A. Fico & Brandi Stone.

Thanks for your 3D review, Xenago. The 3D sounds very much like the first film, Moana 1, which has mostly medium 3D layers. Good but very uneventful most times compared to stronger 3D as you said. The scene climbing the cliff looks good in 1, but could've been amazing in strong 3D.

I wonder if this movie is more of the same, where she sails most of the film out at sea before finally facing the final battle.

A fantastic article has been posted by Drew Taylor at 'The Wrap' about Moana 2's 3D creation, featuring Katie Fico.

https://www.thewrap.com/moana-2-3d-c...ion-explained/

Quote:
One of the members of the team had just come from DreamWorks where, for a time, a premium had been put on 3D.
Quote:
“Moana 2,” in 3D, Fico said, is “more emotional.” They were able to push the colors (they’ll actually make them brighter in 3D to compensate for the lower light levels) and emphasize the scale of things, like when Moana and her band of merry travelers come up against a fearsome Kakamora ship. They’re applying everything they have learned from earlier productions to make the most dynamic stereo presentation yet.

As for why 3D is receiving a continued push, Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer (and co-writer of “Moana 2”) Jared Bush explained: “Something that Disney Animation does better than anyone in the world is bring people into immersive environments. And stereo is the best way to do that, to bring audiences into this world with characters that they love.”

Thanks for the info on their decisions with the stereo 3D. Disney CGI Animation does a nice job with 3D in general and tend to be in the medium layer range. Nothing really bold or daring though, but good to see they still care about 3D in their theatrical films anyway. Just wish they pushed also for blu ray 3D.

This one is bigger and better in almost every conceivable way. The scope is way bigger than the first one, and there are more supporting characters.

Do they spend a lot of time at a new location, or mostly out at sea? I'll check it out eventually, thanks.

Quick 3D review: this feels similar to the 3D in the first movie to me. I've seen the first Moana dozens of times (almost all in 3D) and this one has some really fun moments that show off the 3D, but for the most part it's not strong enough to fully wow while you're watching. Some really cool moments like the Lightning effects and stuff with the oar/hook stand out, but for the most part it's just good solid 3D.

The movie itself I'll have to watch a couple more times to come to a firm opinion. The first movie is just such a tightly spun, nearly flawless story that it's almost impossible to top. I'd rate this as a solid adventure with the characters we like. Definitely fun and worth seeing but not a masterpiece.

Then why don't you produce BD3Ds anymore??? There are TVs/VPRs still alive and kicking at home, not just cinemas....

Doesn’t help with Disney 3D Blu-Ray though. So I don’t really care and I think it’s stupid they use so much money and time for something you can only see for a couple of weeks.

3D Projectors too ! What studios do never make a lick of sense to anyone I doubt it even makes sense for even them with their boneheaded decisions.

I enjoyed the movie and the 3D. It definitely feels like a Moana TV show that was retooled into a movie, but it's a fine and fun ride for what it is. The staging and animation aren't quite as ambitious as the first film, but the 3D is more of a centerpiece. Lots of Z-axis movement, planes and particle effects, a few strong vortexes. There's a handful of strong popouts, though some fall off-screen before you have a chance to fully absorb them. I find most of Disney's animation to move just a bit too fast for ideal stereo. Like they're afraid of slowing down and losing younger viewers' attention.

Where the stereo really shines is any scene with water. The surface is always a plane, with objects visible above and underneath. More finely, every drop of water in this film is partly see-through, with light realistically bending within. This is native 3D rendering at its best.

This is the first time I can recall seeing Stereo Artists and Supervisors receive top billing, in the slide credits before the rolling credits. They're even credited before Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson! Even if Moana 2's 3D doesn't quite reach the heights of Dreamworks Animation's 3D, seeing such respect paid to the Stereo Artists was a delight and I'd love to see more films follow suit.

The movie absolutely does not feel anything like made-for-TV stuff, quite the contrary imho. If you watch it in Dolby Cinema it looks positively gorgeous, much better than anything from Illumination and on par with the other major animation studios.

I watched Spellbound on Netflix and this in the cinema within the same week, the difference is night and day. This is definitely the superior product.

back from the theater with the family (all of it) and one thing I didn't like is too much singing. 3D was mild with some good pop out shot, but not many. glad to have seen it as the chance of a 3D BR is probably highly unlikely.

Would be, unless you’re talking about the AVP. It’s pretty much guaranteed to not get a 3D blu-ray release.

I like musicals, but ugh ... I thought the songs in this were so subpar and unmemorable
