This is one of those rare discs I’d put among the elite releases on UHD. There might be other discs that match it but i don’t think anything can look better than this does.

Agreed. I just watched it and it really looks terrific. One of the best UHD's I've seen. The Atmos track is excellent as well.

The expressions of this looking great is really no surprise. It already had a stellar BD release and looked great, as most John Carpenter films do.

I did not know the TV series was included. How did I miss that?

I can’t get over how gorgeous this 4K looks. I expected a very good transfer from Sony, but nothing of that level of beauty. I also expected the vfx to look worse because of the higher res, but they actually look better than ever (the alien planet in the beginning is now stunning). The colors are what impressed me the most, though: when Jenny and the visitor hitch a ride in the back of a truck, the sight of the primaries forced me to press pause and just admire in awe. Love that film so much. So glad it was treated with such care.

Chances are no on that. Unless Shout! or Arrow gets it in the future. So far none of these sets have yet to release their movies in a standalone. Which is kind of a bummer, yet at the same time kind of good. Good in the fact that it makes these sets actually limited and forcing people to purchase them if they want the films now. But, bad for those of us who just want a few of the films. If you have Sony Rewards, there's a slim chance the code may be one the choices in future; Like "Stripes". Hopefully Sony will one day release the movies from the first set and continue with the other shortly after.

I'd been collecting these sets as they've come out, so this set was gonna be ordered anyway. But Carpenter is an all-time favorite director of mine, so even if I'd passed on the others, I would have to get this for Starman.

The movies each have their own slipcovers and cases. I just put them on the shelves individually and put the box in storage. It's not like they're packaged like the Universal Hitchcock sets, for example.

I put the books on my bookshelves.

Different strokes. You can display them however you like, and others can do the same.

That’s not true at all. Both Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Strangelove got standalone releases in the US and Taxi Driver is all but confirmed to get one this year.

In the case of "Lawrence of Arabia" we finally got that on steelbook most likely due to it's anniversary. However, I'm not finding a standalone release of "Taxi Driver". Don't know why "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" is the only one to have a standalone release without being an anniversary/other edition? Which we'll probably get later this year. But Sony may have planned to release standalones and then changed their mind before going forward and those already pressed. It does seem offaly strange to give that one and not the other 5 (not counting Lawrence since it's an anniversary edition and not a standard release) their own releases.

I really hope that they eventually give this a stand alone release with the tv series included!

Imagine buying the set just for Starman it's literally a $200 disc, how much do you like a single movie lol I know there are members here who would buy a film for $200 so it's funny to me, I'm not one of them but still

Honestly I’ve seriously considered it. Even owning the shout! Disc.

That's why I'm getting it, but I'm also going to sell off the other movies.

I mean, Columbia knows what they're doing.

Carpenter has an avid following, so hopefully they’ll see sense and do a separate release down the line or let someone else handle it.

I don't believe any of the Classic movies sets have had a stand alone release yet. I could be wrong but the few I have are from the actual sets that were broken up for separate disc sales here on the trading forum.

The idea that this won't get a standalone release is ridiculous to me. If Sony likes money ALL of the films from these sets will get standalone releases eventually. They spent the money to remaster them and too many folks like myself won't be conned into buying the sets for one or two titles we really want. Sure there's digital sales to consider, but this is Sony and they've done more for 4K physical releases than any studio I can think of. It could be years before all of these see standalone releases, but I am confident they will happen eventually.

I get the idea that people say physical media is dying, but I think the actual cost of the remaster is bigger hurdle for studios than pressing and distributing discs (unless you're Disney apparently). That's why I think so many boutique labels are getting so many great titles now because they're footing the bill on remastering and doing the HDR grading. It seems a win/win for the studio if their licensing deal means they get those masters to use after the license expires.

But hey, this is all just my opinion, won't be a fact until it happens.

I love how Starman is going for 90-100 on ebay plus shipping, when you can get the whole set for 130ish with coupons

Yep, most of the titles in it are selling for over $50 a piece. Guess I’m buying the set and selling off everything but Starman.

LOL, yeah that's ridiculous. I get people not wanting to buy a whole set for one movie, but paying almost as much as the set for one movie? Insanity.

The people buying the sets and selling them off a piece at a time at least makes more sense, though I'm one of those people who's fine just picking up the films I want digitally for now and continuing to pray to the movie gods at Sony for standalones releases. At least I got my wish on Lawrence of Arabia. Just gotta keep hoping!

Though I should note, I actually love a lot of the movies in these sets. I just absolutely hate sets like this without anything tying the films together beyond the studio that made them.
