I don't think this was ever a difficult title for WHV to release. It's a niche cult horror title released on blu-ray. A different ball-park from, say, SONG OF THE SOUTH...which is unfair, as that film gets a bad wrap purely because it's Disney.

Sadly, Peter looks quite ill in this (he would die of a heart attack in July of 1980, just a couple of weeks before the film's release), but I'd pick up a BD in a New York minute.

All of the Charlie Chan films with Warner Oland are with Fox as are the first several with Sidney Toler. So they're out of the reach of WAC or other boutique labels, unfortunately.

Aren't they public domain and only the best materials are under Fox's control?

I think only the Monogram Charlie Chan movies are PD. Fox seems to have been the most diligent studio in ensuring that their copyrights were renewed.

Ah ok. IIRC most of the elements for those then are at MGM then.

I'm pretty sure that the Fox Warner Oland and Sidney Toler Chan films have been consigned to the Disney gulag to keep Song of the South company. The later Monogram Chan films are a different story. Some are held by MGM, and there is always a chance that Kino may pick them up. Others are held by Warner so there is a chance (perhaps small) that they could appear through the WAC.

As for The Mask of Fu Manchu, I always crack up during the scene when Lewis Stone (or Judge Hardy) asks for "dreams." This will be a definite pre-order, and it could very well be the WAC release of the year for me.

Maybe Sony can coerce Disney to let them release those?

The day I learned that Disney acquired Fox, I went on a Charlie Chan shopping spree and got everything I didn't already have.

Fabulous news, I’m thrilled this is finally getting a Blu-ray release.

The Mask of Fu Manchu is one of my favourite Karloff performances alongside Frankenstein, The Bodysnatcher and Targets.

Speaking of the Warner Oland Fu Manchu movies, does anyone have an idea of why we did not get Daughter of the Dragon, when the first two were restored and released? Perhaps it has something to do with the condition of the surviving materials?

It was a rights issue.

How strange that there are rights issues with Daughter of the Dragon. I wonder what they could be? As far as I know, Daughter of Dragon was the only one of the Oland Fu Manchus which was regularly shown on TCM, while the two others, released on BD by Kino, were completely absent.

It could be as simple as the original paperwork/contracts being missing.

This is going to be a "blind buy" for me, but what I know of its reputation and the enthusiastic comments I see here, I don't think I'll be disappointed by this "blind buy"
