Hm. This just went up on K-Scape and it's 4K SDR with DTS-HD 5.1. A bunch of other Lionsgate movies meanwhile are full 4K HDR with Atmos. This also didn't have the Atmos logo in the credits so I'm not surprised about the lack of that, but the fact we might not even get this movie in HDR is odd to me.

Likely the movie was simply graded in SDR, don't see LG intentionally gimping a release this way.

As far as I know this was pretty lowkey and low budget. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie just couldn't afford SDR grading, or even a theatrical Atmos mix since that requires its own expensive exporting process with proprietary Dolby stuff.

Kinda surprising then it even got a 4k release then, huh?

Honestly yeah. This absolutely bombed in theaters, only got a dismal 3 million worldwide after going from 1,993 screens to 40 by the end of week 2. I don't doubt it's probably lower budget but for any movie, especially from a big company with a big initial rollout, it absolutely didn't even come CLOSE to breaking even. Hoping it becomes a cult classic once it fully rolls out on home video though, I love this movie and I think it really has the makings for a cult hit.

I’m still pretty excited about it!

I was “this close” to seeing in theaters if my wife and daughter went out to do their own thing while it was playing. Never happened though (we usually do things together as a family on the weekend).

I’m pretty pumped to watch it this week though!

Dunno, but this site says that it's supposed to be HDR10 on disc, yet other sites are saying it's only SDR.

The database is created and updated by users. The person who created it probably assumed it would have HDR as a default for a 4K UHD release. As other's pointed out, it's an odd choice not to have it.

LOL. It's rather simple and easy to import from the theatrical masters, and all the studios already license their "proprietary Dolby stuff". Why do you think Atmos is on nearly every major release now over its competition, with tons of catalog stuff being remixed in the format?

The BDinfo scan from an early copy confirms it's SDR.

Exporting Atmos for theaters is an entirely different process that requires loaning out special hardware and a theatrical/farfield Atmos mixing stage checked and approved by a Dolby technician. Catalog Atmos titles are almost completely out of the equation, considering the 99% of the time their Atmos mixes are done in nearfield mixing stages and just use the much simpler process of exporting for home using the software and hardware they have. Boy Kills World was finished and ready for screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2023, and Lionsgate picked up the movie 4 months later in January this year, with the only change after that being the replacement of Bill Skarsgård as the narrator with H. Jon Benjamin and some light re-editing based around that. Considering we had the trailer by February, this likely didn't take long, and considering the movie's niche nature, lowkey marketing, and its theatrical run getting DRASTICALLY cut only 2 weeks in, Lionsgate probably didn't put much extra cash into it, including for a theatrical Atmos deliverable, and instead just had them do it for the home release. It's very possible that either the Atmos mix was done in a smaller studio first and just exported to 5.1 for theaters, or that it was mixed in 5.1 and had a nearfield Atmos mix done for the 4K.

Which all sound mixing studios in Hollywood have now, and it's not loaned - it's leased. Standard stuff really.

Okay. Explain why it doesn't have Atmos or HDR. Clearly you know the answer and don't like anyone else trying to explain it.

Show us what you know.

Yeah, if they can't even afford the equipment for an HDR grade, I kinda doubt they could afford the process of a proper theatrical Atmos mix and deliverable...

Update on the Atmos situation: Just checked the end credits and Formosa Group is listed as the main studio used for post production sound services, a studio that has done many an Atmos movie. Which adds to my theory that the movie's full mix was done in Atmos, but just exported as a 5.1 deliverable for theaters, though likely less because of the hardware and technician stuff, and more due to licensing, as my memory serves me right and there is no Atmos logo in the credits, but Formosa is obviously fully capable of exporting theatrical Atmos. So, most likely Lionsgate just didn't feel like licensing Atmos for the theatrical release since the mix was most likely completely done, minus the changed narration, when it was shown at TIFF, hence the lack of logo in the end credits, but they DID end up licensing it for the home release.

You've made 4 comments on this thread. None of them explain why this movie didn't include HDR or Atmos. That's what you're being asked to explain. Why does this movie not include HDR or Atmos on the 4K Disc?

Um, no. I was correcting an inaccuracy about the tools available to the studio. Is there a FAQ with posts you find acceptable for the thread?
