I'll wait for the 5 movie set :P kidding, I'd need to see it before buying it obviously but I'll watch them eventually.
Probably because it has to be out before part 2. |

I just don't get those "complaints" (because for some reviewers, they really do focus on that). It is part one of four (provided that Costner gets the dough to make a fourth one). And part two is coming real soon as well. Not all films in trilogies or longer film series need to stand on their own.

Saw this last night and absolutely loved it. Definitely a part one, but still a great, sweeping epic with great characters and gorgeous cinematography.

Loved this as well, reminded me of Dune Part One in that it's all set up, no payoff. Not a complete film BUT I'm very intrigued by the setup and characters. It'll be easier to assess once Parts 2-4 drop.

Just saw it and thought it was great. Yes it’s a slow burn and obviously a “part” of a bigger story, but the direction is fantastic and the characters are all interesting. It’s 3 hours long and if part 2 was available I would have immediately spent another 3 hours watching it right after.

Enjoyed this quite a bit. It's definitely just an extended opening act, and I will say that the (mostly elderly) audience I was surrounded by seemed legitimately baffled and upset by the ending montage/teaser for chapter two.
Definitely agree that I would have been down to watch the next three hours right away if the option had been available to me. Great looking movie, too, so should make for a stellar disc. |

I also really enjoyed it. It does leave nothing concluded - it's like if Fellowship of the Ring didn't even have the final battle at the end.
I'll be there opening weekend for Chapter 2 (and 3 and 4 assuming they get finished). Considering the time spent with younger characters I imagine those later Chapters should see them followed as the years pass via newly cast actors. I can see that paying off real well. |

My local theater's options today were an open captioned version with English subtitles this afternoon, or an open captioned version with Spanish subtitles this evening. I can see it without subtitles at 9:30 tonight, though. I want to see it but the theater is making every choice to keep me away.

I plan to see it in the coming days, super bummed it didn't do well weekend one but I wanted to ask you guys - would this had done better box office if released Part 1 Aug 30th or early Sept? Then Part 2 early Oct or early Nov?
Was the 3 hour westers just not a good June date? Or do (general) people mostly wanna see longer films at home? It was a gamble, and he may have to end it in the 3rd one - not sure a 4th will get made but having it as a 3-parter would still be pretty freakin' epic in scope/length. |

Giving some counterpoint that Horizon: An American Saga does have a lot of the right elements and is worth seeing but it's also got a lot of pacing issues waffling between bloody Injun battles and Hallmark style sentimentality. There is a number of minor seeming nonplot scenes where, for example, the caravan leader has to lecture two peeping toms who watch a lady bathing; it's maybe set up but also an example of the tangents Horizon entertains or even belabors. I think it works best when it focuses less on the characters and more on the 'fronter vibe.' Costner's character is especially odd because he is neck deep in scummy situations but written as a hero - which is at times confusing and even unintentionally funny.
It seemed like the showing on Horizon I went to was much more populated than I expected... Last edited by Undeadcow; 07-03-2024 at 03:35 PM. |
