Flawed movie, but it's got several moments that have seared in my memory. It's a bold gamble by Kevin Costner to unleash a *western* in 4 parts...on the big screen. Gotta support this madman!
I'm international (but have a US freight forwarding address). Walmart verifies with US number, so I can't buy direct. eBay scalpers are horrible. What are my options? |

I honestly walked out feeling like I hadn't sat through a three hour movie.
Contrasted with much shorter movies I'd watched where I felt every minute of their run time. I'd have to scroll through the thread here, but as it's been stated: the problems with this aren't the film itself, it's the theaters short changing it. Then look at the negative press for it, while outright stinkers are given rave reviews. People are still calling Waterworld a disaster decades later, even though it made the requisite money back and more to be considered a blockbuster. |

Unfortunately the theater I saw it at was a older one where they don't seem to adjust the picture "settings" as the dark scenes were so dark you couldn't make out everything going on. Can't wait to see it again in my home theater in 4K with atmos. |

Costner may also use this time to re-edit Part2, to reconcile with “criticisms” of Part1. That will mean more spend on post (sound mixing mainly), but it’s a possibility - especially to trim down the runtime.
It was a bold gamble that didn’t pay off. Loved the idea of being able to see the sequel ON THE BIG SCREEN right after a few weeks. I guess we might have to wait much longer now. Hopefully they won’t eliminate the international release for small markets. I saw Part1 in Dubai where most screens have laser projection, excellent sound and lux seats. I was one of only 2 other people on opening weekend ![]() |

estimated budget: 175 Million gross US & Canada: 88 Million gross worldwide: 264 Million That's a disastrous bomb no matter how you look at it. Especially the US number. |

That estimate has crawled upwards a bit. Last time I was in this discussion, it was lower and made double the budget with domestic and gross. I did check the numbers and you're right, but the numbers were right then too. Then again, according to that studio, the harry potter series didn't make money when they got sued for not paying people...so hollywood accounting is weird.

All that being said, pretty much all films eventually make a profit with merchandising and continuing home video sales figured in. Even recent bombs like The Marvels will eventually turn a profit, but we'll never know those numbers. Part of the magic of Hollywood accounting. ![]() |

Kevin Costner made sure he had funding (on top of his own money) to make all 4 films and he achieved this by signing deals with streaming services. It doesn't matter how shit it does at the box office these films are getting made. Not only that but there will be even more likelihood of limited editions and steelbooks because they will want to milk home media as much as possible. I watched Chapter One last night and although I was confused a little at first with what he was doing with the editing and the change in places and characters, I soon got into the rhythm of the way the story was being told. I thought the film was fantastic. I can easily see the complete saga coming together and becoming a masterpiece for Kevin Costner. The only thing that was odd is him not choosing 2:35:1 aspect ratio. Although I guess the more the camera sees the more budget you need! I can easily see how many people are not digging it, it's kind of what happens when you are telling a 12 hour story but can only release the first 3 hours to the public. It must be frustrating for Costner waiting so that everyone can appreciate all four chapters to really appreciate the story he is trying to tell. I don't think it helped that it took over an hour for Costner's character to appear. Last edited by cherbert; 07-22-2024 at 10:19 AM. |

No pics, but from everything I've found, part 3 was already filming. Part 2 would already had to have been done for it to have had a release date so close to part 1. Some of the cast already have the script for part 4.
While it doesn't go as for as cherbert lays out, it confirm a lot of the key details: https://variety.com/2024/film/news/k...te-1236066315/ The theaters really did this dirty, and I really hope to see all four parts in the theater. I'd even go for a all day marathon with all of them. |

There is also an article out there to suggest Netflix have offered Costner a deal to cover 3 & 4. Last edited by cherbert; 07-22-2024 at 03:02 PM. |
