Oh man, they're gonna nail us with the horizon four steelbon case down the road aren't they?

Flawed movie, but it's got several moments that have seared in my memory. It's a bold gamble by Kevin Costner to unleash a *western* in 4 parts...on the big screen. Gotta support this madman!

I'm international (but have a US freight forwarding address). Walmart verifies with US number, so I can't buy direct. eBay scalpers are horrible. What are my options?

I honestly walked out feeling like I hadn't sat through a three hour movie.

Contrasted with much shorter movies I'd watched where I felt every minute of their run time.

I'd have to scroll through the thread here, but as it's been stated: the problems with this aren't the film itself, it's the theaters short changing it.

Then look at the negative press for it, while outright stinkers are given rave reviews. People are still calling Waterworld a disaster decades later, even though it made the requisite money back and more to be considered a blockbuster.

I brought up the theater issue as well, every theater that I looked at was playing it on the smaller screens. A quiet place took up all the IMAX and Despicable Me 4 was playing every 10 minutes taking up most of the rest. I guess they didn't want to tie up a big theater with a 3.5 hour movie that would cut into revenue.

Unfortunately the theater I saw it at was a older one where they don't seem to adjust the picture "settings" as the dark scenes were so dark you couldn't make out everything going on. Can't wait to see it again in my home theater in 4K with atmos.

They're pulling the August release of Part II. They want people to discover the 1st installment, hoping extra time will do that.

Costner may also use this time to re-edit Part2, to reconcile with “criticisms” of Part1. That will mean more spend on post (sound mixing mainly), but it’s a possibility - especially to trim down the runtime.

It was a bold gamble that didn’t pay off. Loved the idea of being able to see the sequel ON THE BIG SCREEN right after a few weeks.

I guess we might have to wait much longer now. Hopefully they won’t eliminate the international release for small markets. I saw Part1 in Dubai where most screens have laser projection, excellent sound and lux seats. I was one of only 2 other people on opening weekend

I've seen it twice in the theaters. The critics don't really know what a great movie really is. Not everything has to be Star Wars, movies with apes, Disney cartoons and superheroes.

Waterworld:

estimated budget: 175 Million
gross US & Canada: 88 Million
gross worldwide: 264 Million

That's a disastrous bomb no matter how you look at it. Especially the US number.

That estimate has crawled upwards a bit. Last time I was in this discussion, it was lower and made double the budget with domestic and gross. I did check the numbers and you're right, but the numbers were right then too. Then again, according to that studio, the harry potter series didn't make money when they got sued for not paying people...so hollywood accounting is weird.

Well, that worldwide gross includes the domestic and according to the films' wiki page the marketing and distribution costs brought the total outlay up to about 235 Million. Plus the gross doesn't take into account that the theaters keep about 50% of the ticket sales for themselves. In its' initial run, it lost a ton of money.

All that being said, pretty much all films eventually make a profit with merchandising and continuing home video sales figured in. Even recent bombs like The Marvels will eventually turn a profit, but we'll never know those numbers. Part of the magic of Hollywood accounting.

Chapter Two is already in pre-production and Principle Photography is happening concurrently for Chapter Three and Chapter Four.

Kevin Costner made sure he had funding (on top of his own money) to make all 4 films and he achieved this by signing deals with streaming services. It doesn't matter how shit it does at the box office these films are getting made.

Not only that but there will be even more likelihood of limited editions and steelbooks because they will want to milk home media as much as possible.

I watched Chapter One last night and although I was confused a little at first with what he was doing with the editing and the change in places and characters, I soon got into the rhythm of the way the story was being told. I thought the film was fantastic. I can easily see the complete saga coming together and becoming a masterpiece for Kevin Costner. The only thing that was odd is him not choosing 2:35:1 aspect ratio. Although I guess the more the camera sees the more budget you need!

I can easily see how many people are not digging it, it's kind of what happens when you are telling a 12 hour story but can only release the first 3 hours to the public. It must be frustrating for Costner waiting so that everyone can appreciate all four chapters to really appreciate the story he is trying to tell. I don't think it helped that it took over an hour for Costner's character to appear.

No pics, but from everything I've found, part 3 was already filming. Part 2 would already had to have been done for it to have had a release date so close to part 1. Some of the cast already have the script for part 4.

While it doesn't go as for as cherbert lays out, it confirm a lot of the key details:

https://variety.com/2024/film/news/k...te-1236066315/

The theaters really did this dirty, and I really hope to see all four parts in the theater. I'd even go for a all day marathon with all of them.

That was the source of my snark, the fact that I’ve seen nothing that supports all the things he said, and I’m aware part three has begun filming, which is promising, but we don’t yet know how the box office failure will impact some of the downstream dominos Costner had set up with regard to financing. I very much hope all four features come to pass. I just think it’s very early in the game to be counting all our chickens in one giant-Steelbook-holding-the-entire-saga basket.

Everything I said is backed up by Wikipedia.

There is also an article out there to suggest Netflix have offered Costner a deal to cover 3 & 4.

There's always that caveat that it's user edited and not official studio information. Same with IMDB.

QFT. Not to mention that if Netflix gets involved, the possibility of a physical release of 3 and 4 immediately tanks.
