I would pay $60-70 a season of Buffy and Angel (12 seasons) if it was all redone in 16x9 HD. It would be worth it to me. I don't want to stretch or use pillarboxing.

I'm a big fan of both series too (well not so much seasons 3 and 4 of Angel when his son was involved...eh I never liked that kid) but $60-70 per season BD is asking too much for most consumers let alone fans, especially if this recession holds for a while. That ends up being almost $500 for Buffy and another $350 for Angel...that's almost one thousand dollars if you factor sales taxes and/or shipping fees depending where you are and how you acquire it. I'd be more willing to spend something in the range of $250-300 for like an entire BD boxset of Buffy for the 7 seasons and like $175-200 for an entire BD set of Angel for its 5 seasons. Figure then you're averaging about $40-50 per season which is about what most of us spent on them the first time around on DVD.

I never really got into Buffy, but Angel on the other hand i really liked. I'd love to see that and Firefly on BD.

It's too bad WB cancelled Angel just when it really started to pick up steam. I've been getting my season 6 fix with the comic book series they recently put out.

You can order them from here:

I spent between like 48 and 64 dollars per set for the DVDs back when they first came out. So I just meant they could charge me the same price or slightly higher than they did back in 2002 and 2003.

It doesn't look like dead space to me, but I think we'll just have to disagree on that point

OAR for Buffy S4 onwards in the UK could be argued to be 16:9 because that is how those seasons were shown on BBC here, and that is how the DVDs are. Many people will never have seen it any other way.

I'm normally a purist for these things, but I honestly think it is very debatable what the "correct" OAR is for the later Buffy seasons. When you look at the camera markings they used to film it, they were clearly very much framing with 16:9 in mind. The 4:3 frame is a small portion of the 35mm frame, cropped out of the centre of the 16:9 frame that was letterboxed in the full 35mm frame.

If they could offer a Blu-ray technological solution to optionally place black bars over the sides of the 16:9 frame, e.g. perhaps PiP could support this, then people who want to see it in 4:3 wouldn't be losing any resolution. I think offering it on Blu-ray in 4:3 only would kills sales over here, as people simply aren't going to want to replace their 16:9 DVDs with 4:3 Blu-rays, no matter how "correct" it could be argued to be.

I would be very interested to hear from Michael Gershman on what relative priorities were given to how it looked in 4:3 and 16:9 when composing the shots, but I've never seen any comment from him on the matter. I know Joss has said it should be 4:3, but I would personally attach more value to the DP's opinion.

Fox knows how well "Buffy" and "Angel" (and "Firefly/Serenity") DVDs sell so until Joss or someone else comes out with some kind of official word that they'll never be released in HD, I will hold out hope as having them on Blu would be freakin'-freaktastic.

Joss's official statement on the subject

Quote:
Gentle Viewer,

No doubt you are looking over this scrumptious BUFFY package and exclaiming "No @#$%ing letterboxing? Whutzat? GYPPED!" Possibly you are breaking things. Please calm down. The fabulous episodes of BUFFY (and that one crappy one, sorry about that, seemed really cool when we wrote it...) were not shot in a widescreen format. They were shot in the TV 4 by 3 ratio. Now I'm a letterbox fanatic, but not just because I crave th' wide. I want to see the whole screen, as framed by the director. The BUFFY's I (and others) shot were framed for traditional TVs. Adding space to the sides simply for the sake of trying to look more cinematic would betray the very exact mise-en-scene I was trying to create. I am a purist, and this is the purest way to watch BUFFY. I have resisted the effort to letterbox BUFFY from the start and always will, because that is not the show we shot. This is. So enjoy! Stop breaking things. You're getting the best presentation of -- let's face it -- the best Television Drama since MATCHGAME '79. Bye for now!

See above, there is not debate. what you're seeing is protection, not framing for.

Doesn't change the fact that it's wrong. Pioneer did that with one title because they couldn't find a print in good enough condition to retransfer, but that was a single case.

Joss isn't going to make that kind of statement, because it's probably not true. What is true is that Angel is more likely if for no other reason than it's pretty consistantly wide, and is more "cinematic", so better for the HD realm

See the dead space now? How the Gentleman are all crowded in the middle? Considering this is a Joss directed episode, the above applies double. Please keep in mind I eyeballed it, and did it quickly so it may be a little off

Angel would be easiest to get on Blu-Ray, they just screwed up with the first season and would need to get that 16x9. If the DVDs look that great, just imagine what a decent Blu-Ray treatment would do!

These are the only two television shows that are an absolute automatic purchase for me if they come out on Blu, pretty much regardless of price point if they're done reasonably well. I bought Lost season 3 on impulse recently, but whether or not I will keep it is up in the air depending on whether or not the series gets a proper ending (ala Buffy) or a crappy one (ala Angel, Alias). Battlestar Galactica DVD and Blu purchases will also be on hold till I see if I get burned on that ending as well.

Basically I've learned that with any series I like I should expect to get burned by the studios (I won't be buying Supernatural, for example, till I've seen the whole thing). I treasure Buffy for actually being a complete series. I wish Angel had ended properly (without the shortened timeframe and cross-network casting restrictions), but I still like it if only because it gives me more of that universe.

I know Buffy wasn't shot for widescreen, but I don't really care if they smart stretch it, black bar it, or what not, if I can get a much better picture quality wherever possible. Even if they couldn't do much to help with Season 1 (fugly), if they did their best I'd be all over it. Hoping for this may be a long shot, but if they want my money this is how they're going to have to get it. Otherwise it'll just be movies, and now that I know which DVDs I never watched (ie Star Wars) those will be much harder sales.

Nice find! Everyone should sign up on amazon, every little helps.

It makes sense to release Firefly first and see how that sells before thinking about doing a ton of work on Buffy and Angel.
