They've done all that legwork for farrks sake - for all the footage that comprises the theatrical cut anyway . Yet they're plopping the Universal master on there yet again. It boggles my mind.
Seeing as Universal are the rights holders, what they say goes and I'd imagine they're insisting upon their master being used for any theatrical UHD. And on the flipside, now that the extended/TV cut has been remastered by Arrow (albeit in 2K IIRC) then Uni won't do any more work on it themselves to make it 4K ready, hence slapping the 1080p extended onto their UHD as a bonus feature. Very curious to know what Plaion have actually done with it beyond platitudes like "completely new 4K master".

Be warned tho, Filmmaker will come in and tell you he couldn't give a rat's ass about the theatrical, deal with it etc etc

Lol. Yes, Filmmaker's perpetual Ulysses boner did actually cross my mind as I typed the words 'theatrical cut' . Somewhere, far across the ocean, he has just sensed a great disturbance in the force.

I would appreciate everyone’s kindness and respect in my time of mourning for maybe the coolest effing thing to ever come out of Plaion and they won’t ship it to the U.S.!!!

And the theatrical cut failed community college. All hail the Ulysses Cut!!!

Why put so much work into redoing the Ulysses Cut, only to lock it behind an "everything but the kitchen sink" edition.
I guess it drives sales towards the more expensive product, but once it sells out (and I imagine it will pretty quickly), all you're left with is a standard edition that offers basically nothing over the Arrow.

I don't think this will sell out quickly. It's not limited and they made it pretty clear that this is the way they want to sell this. It's not Turbine where a regular release is practically a given once the LE sold out.

What is the general consensus on Plaion encodes? Their release of Past Lives (which I would absolutely love to pick up, if given the respect it deserves) didn't seem to earn any glowing reviews here.

They're pretty good. And the German release of Past Lives is great but it's from Studio Canal like the UK one. Plaion is just doing the distribution for SC in Germany since 2022 I think.

I would counter that it probably won't be as much work as we think and this is just bait to hype a set up. That Hard Target workprint was also bait, I didn't see anyone raving about watching that since. This is a huge set with a lot of goofs that can be made, I think I'll still trust an Arrow package as an importer.

I am pretty sure the German dub alone is actual much work. And expensive. They said so. They said it was more expensive than a full dub because of so many expensive voice actors (if I got that right). I know you don't care about the German dub (and neither do I), but it's a German release with the main target being the German market and I fail to see why people are trying pretty hard to find something wrong with it before we even saw it. (Having said that, I don't really fail to see why.)

Truth is: The Plaion 4K of the Ulysses cut will most likely best the Arrow BD. I don't know why it shouldn't. And I also don't expect any unwelcome "pq stunts" with Plaion. If you want to complain, maybe complain about Arrow being lazy and not doing a 4K. The Arrow 4K release was lazy IMO. And I am not saying so only now.

It was certainly lazy work from Arrow and I also expect the Plaion to best the Arrow BD. But when they’re not making it available to anyone outside the EU, then the whole exercise becomes somewhat moot for 90% of us here (without shelling out some serious moolah to a third party). Arrow at least made their recycled piss version available to the whole world

Unless you’d be willing to….. trade.

[Show spoiler]
I totally understand complaining about not shipping to the UK or the US and won't complain about complaining about that. With some international labels *cough* A24 *cough* shipping to Germany basically equals not shipping to Germany as well, so I totally understand. With the US I guess diabolik will be of service though (?).

Also, did anyone ever try them re. their "Ist Dein Land nicht aufgeführt? Melde Dich bei uns und wir schauen, was wir tun können!" ("Is your country not listed? Contact us and we'll see what we can do!")? If not, I might actually have to complain about the complaining.

re. trade: You're one of the few where I feel slightly bad about it, but I hate having to bother with shipping stuff, so have to politely pass anyway.

There is no way 9 out of 10 people are trading up their domestic Arrow set for a $100 Plaion import, hype all you want, It's not happening. If they want me to buy that new cut it needs to be released on its own, or brought to the US/UK. There is nothing wrong with Arrow's Ultra HD presentation, it's better than Universal's even, and I have no issue with the quality of the other discs in that set. A new thing is always shiny but it's an expensive world for movie collecting now and people are over upgrading due to hype or for a bonus disc.

No one is hyping this. I really don't see where you are getting this from. Nor do I see many people importing it or am I telling anyone to do so. Because it is fooking expensive, especially if they don't ship to your country. But in Germany it's the first release of the long version (and the Ulysses cut at that) with complete German dub and in my case it's the first 4K release of the Ulysses cut. So it's not an upgrade to a "new shiny thing with a bonus disc" it's an upgrade from BD to 4K really. Don't care about anything else coming with this set. The soundtrack actually annoys me, because I have the proper 2 discs version already.

But to hype some: It's supposed to fix some audio errors coming with the Arrow with the Arrow not using the proper TC audio track/dialogue.

Keep in mind that a lot of Germans care for the German dubs. Lots of people watched the movies first with the German dub, so it’s nostalgic and with memories connected. Some labels invest lots of time and money into them. Sometimes there are different dubs created in the past decades for the same movie and may never been on disc before. So they fully remaster them. Or sometimes they create new parts with narrators for extended scenes that was never on disc before. Or they record a completley new one. Time and expenses are then represented in the final price..

The Ulysses Cut is the Water of Life.

I imagine that most, if not all, of the UC exclusive footage will be upscaled like what was done for the Extended TV Alan Smithee edit of Dune.

It makes you wonder why Universal or Lionsgate won't allow anyone to rescan the deleted scenes to Dune. Especially since they haven't blocked the TV cut overseas or even a fanedit from being released.

You are literally hyping an NFT drop in that last quote since the disc doesn't even exist yet.

As far as I know there has not been any definitive reasons for Dune's unaccounted for deleted footage other than that they are likely lost due to organizational oversights or even potentially permanently lost due to a fire years ago.

Hollywood's archiving of elements has long been inconsistent to put it gently.
